PH recommends?
Discussion
Gentlefolk - I have recently purchased my first (fairly) decent laptop (AMD 64 3000+ processor, 512meg ram, 128 meg 9600 graphics supporting 32 bit at 1400x1085). I am after suggestions for the games I can now play - for years I have made do with the "old" games (pre red alert II).
So in no particular order can the patrons of PH suggest a first person shooter (is Doom 3 as good as the hype?), a racing game, a role player (internet or not) and the best strategy (C&C style).
Your help will be much appriciated.

The only strategy game I have played, because it's all in realtime and not a "take it in turns" board game style was Medieval Total War. The latest and best Rome:Total War is out October 1st. Looks like being very good. www.totalwar.com/community/rome.htm
It's the game that the BBC2 series "Time Commanders" used for it's battles.
Doom 3 might struggle on a laptop, Half-Life and it's add-ons that come in one box now would be good if you haven't played it before.
Or Unreal II.
Racing Games.....really need a wheel, if you have one Grand Prix Legends (with all the updates and extra tracks), the soon to be released GTR and Formula One Challenge 99-02 (because of the extra series, Prototypes, BTCC, Rally, DTM, and FIA GT add-ons)

Su-feckin-perb! Thanks for the heads up.
I adore strategy games and I remember watching various idots on the TV show and yearning to play this. Looks like it'll be utterly awesome - Activision normally deliver exceptionally on these types of game.
Anyone remember Dark Reign? Kept me amused for months, especially with the Internet multiplay.
cheers

That's a nice laptop! Here are my suggestions:-
FPS - I thoroughly enjoyed Doom3 and Unreal Tournament 2004 for scary atmosphere and frantic "run & gun" gameplay respectively. Although I've not played it, Far Cry is also getting good reviews.
Racing game - Other than the usual suspects (GP4, GPL, TOCA etc) I found Need For Speed Underground a fun arcade-style game, if not a serious or particularly accurate sim. In fact, I've played through it 3 times now, and am in the process of trying to beat everything using only an MX5
Role playing - no contest. Deus Ex (the original game and NOT the sequel Deus Ex: Invisible War). It's a fantastically intricate and intelligent game, very long, but it's a story well told, great missions, good voice acting and a compelling plot. It's in the budget games section now, as it's a couple of years old, and although the graphics are last-year, the gameplay and story more than make up for it.
Strategy - I'm not very original here, as I'm a Command & Conquer man all the way, having bought every game in the series from the very start. C&C Generals is pretty good fun, though, as far as I remember.
Hope this helps!

how could I forget to include these other great games?
GTA & GTA Vice City
No-One Lives Forever 1 & 2
Splinter Cell 1 & 2
... and from the left field, Uplink

is that gtr-4 your on about? its had a realy bad write-up.they (some ps2 mag) recon that it tries to be a g.t clone but fails miserably and is mearly cashing-in on people looking at it thinking its a sort-of pre-release gt4.
Probably not the same game mate, there is a GTR which has been around for years on the PC but what FWD is on about is a completly new game. Plus I dont think the PS2 is getting the game.
It does look stunning and has had great write ups all around
Just wish my damm PC would play the demo without crashing
For online full on war stuff, get 'Joint Operations:Typhoon Rising'.
