Want to buy a nintendo 3DS for my son

where should i go to buy one ?

i have seen them priced between £80 and £140

is there anything else i should consider ?

Try and test one first if you haven't.

Some people suffer from headaches when using the 3DS. Only a small number suffer, but worth bearing in mind.

Yes you can. It's just a slider on the side. There are specific 3DS games as well as normal DS games. Apologies if I'm stating the obvious.

If the 3D aspect isn't a big deal you may be able to pick up a cheap standard DS in the likes of Game/Gamestation and HMV etc.

3D can also be turned off in software and pin protected if you want. We bought one for the boy who is 6 and did this. Also I would get a 3Ds if you can rather than a normal one as I can see that more games will be brought out for the 3Ds exclusively and they are also backwards compatible with DS games.

We had this just after christmas, my 5 yr old son couldnt find his DS lite so we looked into the larger one.
No-one had them in stock, only 3DS's. We left the shop as I didnt want him to have the 3DS due to Nintendo saying they are harmful to s certain age. When we returned a few weeks later, same story - no XL's and only a pink 3DS in stock. No idea of when more stock was coming in. In the meantime we found his DS under the seat in my car.....
Ended up buying a used 3DS - unmarked with some games for £150. Sat down with it and hooked it to the wifi, put necessary restrictions on it and away he went. All the games work without 3d, older ones work no problems and some of the camera games are rather funny. Especially the one where swing the game around to bring targets into view.

Go for it, they are great bits of kit. Games like Lego Batman are addictive for adults as well as kids.
