It looks like my router/connection woes are well and truly put to rest (after about 2 years rolleyes) yes as I did the Port forwarding (open) thingy for my Xbox over the weekend.

I spent last night in a full lobby with all the people I usually clash with (connection wise) without any issues at all.

BEFORE doing it it would show as Open or Moderate (depending on the mood it was in) rolleyes
Now the Xbox has its own open port and shows as a OPEN NAT all the time

happy days.

btw this is what I did for anyone else struggling:

read here:

Go in the Router under the "Security" tab, click on "Services", click "add", give it the name XBOX TCP/UDP, set start port as "3074" and end port as "3074", set type as "TCP/UDP", click apply/ok. Repeat again, giving it the name "XBOX UDP", start port "88", end port "88", type "UDP", click apply/ok.

Now go to "Firewall" under the Configuration tab, under incoming click "add", now select the service "XBOX UDP/TCP" from the drop down menu. select forward to specific IP address or similar (cant remember exactly) and type in your Xbox's IP address e.g. 192.168.0.3, click log "never", then apply ok. Do the same for "XBOX UDP" and your again click apply. That's it! you've successfully opened the necessary ports on your Router and told your Router that any incoming info on those ports should be sent to your Xbox

Now do a network connection test in your Xbox dashboard and you should get an "Open" connection.

I hope this helps any of you in the same boat as I was.

I had issues for months after changing to a Belkin Play Max router. Couldn't hold a connection, couldnt get on Xbox Live. After much messing around this is what I found out.

The Router has about 13 different channels its transmits on, the most common ones are 6 and 11. These channels can get inteference from other electrical items and disrupt your signal. What I did was turn everything on and went through each router channel and on my PC looked at which channel gave me the strongest connection and tried that. Turmned out for me it was channel 2.

As Blade said there are a few setting in the router that can massivly affect how you connect.

Best way is to create a static IP address in the Xbox's network settings something like 192.168.2.15

1. In the router settings under System Settings turn off UPnP.

2. On the virtual Servers Page you need to open up the following ports

TCP 80
UDP 88
UDP/TCP 3074
UDP/TCP 53

3. Under Firewall settings set you should see something called DMZ. If you input your IP you assigned to your Xbox here it assigns it outside of the NAT settings so you will never get a strict NAT setting.

This all helped me create a connection that works great for Xbox Live and doesnt affect any other devices connections.

Its so much easier just setting your Xbox/Ps3 to the DMZ on your router...

Interesting stuff.

Is it better to set a higher figure as the static IP on Xbox? I set mine to "192.168.0.3"

Would I bet better off using a higher one like "192.168.0.10" ? Obviously I'd have to change the router settings to match the new (higher) one!

Yes.

Your router will assign every wireless device an IP address to connect to it. To make sure everything works correctly pick an IP address that ends higher than the amount of gadgets that can be assigned. Just use 192.168.2.20

With your NAT issues you need to set say 192.168.2.20 outside the DMZ in your Router to get rid of that issue. Then manually configure your network settings for your Xbox wireless adapter to always connect using 192.168.2.20.

Every router is different. Some manufacturers make it easy others dont. I have a Belkin which I believe and can verify is a bd to find a reliable connection over any distance.

You would only have issues if your Xbox was running Auto settings and you frequently connected different gadgets to your Wifi.

Your router could assign an IP address to say a mobile phone on the .3 channel and if your Xbox was manually set to .3 it wouldnt be able to connect. Best bet is to just set it high to avoid conflict.

Seems like I've got fhe same problem as you Ally, I couldn't join the PHSM lobby the other night due to connection problems. Do you have the black Sagcom Sky router?

You can usually assign a IP Address to a Mac Address (ie 00:00:00:00:00:00 = 192.168.0.3) in your router which in mine is in the LAN IP section. That way there is never any confusion & you won't have to assign higher IP's to devices without interference. You will obviously have to find out your Mac Address of the Xbox/PS3 and manually input the details on the console. Once done, the only data that can pass through at that IP Add. is the device with the matching Mac Add.

Couple of Xbox nooby questions too sorry.

I've had a couple of messages with the Speech attached but I can't hear anything, am I doing something wrong?

Only recently have I learnt you can't actually copy any media files onto the Xbox (.avi files etc), so what's the point with them giving me a 320GB HDD if nothing can be stored on it?

Did you figure that out? I've got the PS3 set as the DMZ (which I prefer) but I've just noticed the Xbox is set to Strict. Is the only way to sort that out by setting all that Port stuff as you mentioned in the 1st post?

I also noticed someone saying they Forwarded Ports while having the device set as the DMZ, there's no need to to do that as DMZ allows all connections in & out through anyway smile.

I'm reluctant to do this as I rarely can't join lobbies & have never been the one 'stuck' in the game when it returns us back to the menus.

However, if I do, will it mess anything else up on other computers in the house that go through or use the router (my work PC, laptop, phones etc) in that I'll have to change other settings, or will they continue to work as normal?

Ta.
