I was just about to buy a PS3 for the simple reason of GT5 - my son has GT on the PSP and I love playing this version. But then I saw news about Forza 4 on Xbox....!
But a few questions about Forza 4.....
1.) Does it have Le Mans and nurburgring available as a track? (Le Mans is pretty much essential for me!)
2.) Does it have car buying / selling / tuning like in GT - this is one of my favourite bits of the game - fiddling around with virtual cars....
Appreciate any advice. Thanks!

1. Not all the track and cars have been announced yet, but I would think both those tracks would be in. FM3 has them, and le mans has 2 versions with and without the chicanes on the mulsanne straight.
2. Yes, you can upgrade and tune your car, a lot. As said above, it is done better than GT5 (IMO) as you can upgrade brakes and there are some engine swaps. (I have both FM3 and GT5, I'm getting FM4, it's on pre order)
Have a look around www.forzamotorsport.net and see what you think.

The Forza series is way ahead of GranTurismo. I see no reason for Forza 4 not to be more of the same.
have a read on http://forzamotorsport.net/news.aspx
something to consider from the other thread:
I prefer how the solo mode flows in Forza compared to GranTurismo
for example:
career mode in GT....
"mazda MX5 series"...right I'll do some boring races in my little FWD starter car then buy a MX5 for this
all good so farbought MX5..enter champs...win champs and what car do you win for that? another MX5...great

next up "subaru impreza series" ....see above
..yep I won another Impreza

career mode in Forza...
"mazda MX5 series"...oh good I won one of those while using my little FWD starter car
good stuffhop in the MX5 in my garage..enter champs...win champs, what car do you win for that? oooooh and Impreza...nicely done
next up "subaru impreza series" ...
oh good
hop in the Impreza...win that and get awarded a M3next race "M3 cup"......
and so on

GT5 doesn't flow at all

as a whole it is such a disappointment, considering it was about 6 years in the making.
Thanks for the replies - very interesting, and pushing me towards the Forza series!!!
Also I checked the websites, and it seems FORZA 4 will have an E39 M5 in which really sells it to me, as that's my real car!
Any other comments please let me know - it's all appreciated!
Have a good day!
Philip.

I am far from a fanboy of either.
I enjoy GT5 a lot, the physics really are incredible and in some areas better then Forza 3, will they be better then Forza 4? I don't know.
For me though, GT5 wasn't 'fun'. They somehow made it too serious which makes it not so enjoyable to play, which is obviously the only reason anyone plays games.
Forza has the fun factor as well as a lot of variety. You could spend a whole Saturday on Forza and not race once, seriously.
Painting cars is seriously fun in Forza as well as making vinyls, replica race cars etc etc.
From a totally unbiased view Forza is considerably better then GT5.

I only own a PS3 and have owned every version of gt including GT5 and psp. GT5 is pretty much the only game ive played for almost a year solid. I only played Forza 3 for about an hour a year a go so i may not be best placed to comment. However id go for Forza 4. I love GT5 but as someone said earlier, it is a let down in parts. GT5 is like sending your kid off to uni of who you are incredibly proud, especially when they get a first and are top of their class, so you remain ever so proud and even brag to you mates (conveniently leaving out that it was in media studies at Barnsley polytechnic). Close but....

I no fanboi either...I have all the previous Gran-Turismo and Forza games ...still have all my old consoles too

I have played both but don't own a PS3.
Found GT5 to be a pretty good game but nowhere near good enough considering the hype and how long it took to get to market. I also think they were taking the pi55 by releasing a game which clearly wasn't actually finished. I also think that they have been lazy in terms of some of the detailing. Take the scenery around the Nurburgring for example. On GT5 it is just generic trees whereas on Forza 3 there are the wonderful views across the Eifel from the high points pretty much like the real thing.
I also find the driving experience to be far more entertaining and rewarding on Forza. Maybe you could argue that it's a wee bit more arcade however, you still have to brake sensibly to turn in at the right time lest you understeer into the barriers but dab the handbrake and feather the throttle and you can control the most fantastic powerslides which makes drifting a lot of fun and a game in itself whereas I found this extremely difficult if not nigh on impossible with GT5. Had GT5 been better I would have bought a PS3 for it but FM3 wins by a mile and I am looking forward to 4!

This will turn in to a Fan Boy fight unfortunately.
I have a PS3 and bought GT5 on launch day. The game is totally brilliant. I loved every minute of it (bar a few B-Spec races). Once I bought every car I wanted on GT5 it became a bit stale, so I purchased an Xbox (used) along with FM3.
I have been playing FM3 ever since and I love every minute of that too! Heres my Pro's and cons:
Gran Turismo 5:
I believe FM3 is the more enjoyable game as you can spend hours making your car look how you want it too. Having both is certainly no bad thing.
FM4? Well we will see, I expect it to be brilliant but still a different kind of game to GT5, a perfect companion if you wish...

I have been playing FM3 ever since and I love every minute of that too! Heres my Pro's and cons:
Gran Turismo 5:
- Do not believe for one second that FM3 competes with GT5 graphics wise, the premium cars (which have cockpit view) are totally amazing, in the right car and on the right track GT5 makes FM3 look very dated.
- Handling, well its far more realistic than FM3, does this make it more fun? No not really, I prefer FM3 for power sliding lairyness, but if its an authentic driving simulator with realistic weight shifts and handling, GT5 is where its at.
- There is a lack of car modding in GT5, standard cars can be repainted but the wheels cannot be changed which is disappointing, especially when iconic cars like the E46 CSL come on the wrong wheels.
- Theres a lot of Jap Crap in the game, 40 odd skylines, dozens of MX5's, Impreza's etc.
- Due to the amount of Jap crap, there are a lot of performance cars missing. Sagaris, M6, Focus RS, Latest SL Merc, Superleggera etc etc.
- Gran Turismo does become a little boring truth be told and the B-Spec mode can be boring, frustrating and damn right stupid. Theres one race very early on where you need a 20m credit car (and even then its hard work) to complete.
- The AI is very boring. Usually slow and careful.
- Damage is very minimal
- Limited choice of wheels, around 12 per car.
- Colours are stupid, you have to win "paint chips", for example if you won a blue ST, you couldnt paint it ST orange unless you won the correct paint chip.
- Is more Arcade like in its handling which makes it better fun, the power sliding etc is a bit far fetched however the ability to rewind in races lets you really push on and experiment holding long power slides.
- Car modding is very good, although I believe the tweaking system (suspension, downforce etc) is better in GT5. The ability to change drivetrains and engines makes for good fun, I love my 650bhp RWD Bentley and Focus RS powered 4X4 "Fiesta RS".
- Wheels can be changed on all cars. Good selection for all types of cars.
- The look of the cars can be customised beyond belief. Paint the cars any color you like and then add graphics to create all kinds of effects, I for example have created an "F430 Scuderia Challenge Stradale", Lexus ISF Police car and various other cool things.
- There may be a lot less cars in the game, but there are more interesting manufacturers and models. Porsche & Gumpert, Sagaris & Focus RS for example
- I find I progress to quickly through FM3, within an hour I had a few lovely cars, makes getting them that little bit less special.
I believe FM3 is the more enjoyable game as you can spend hours making your car look how you want it too. Having both is certainly no bad thing.

I Own both PS3 and Xbox 360, and have played both GT5 (with G25 wheel) and Forza 3 Extensively.
Forza, all the way. All. The. Way.
Forza 3 is miles ahead of GT5. In fun, in handling (for the most part) ,in excitement of getting your hands on your favorite metal, tuning it, and punting it around a track of your choice. I even prefer the visual style. GT5 (for the most part) looks flat by comparison. So long as Forza 4 doesn't mess up and adds a little bit more, a few more cars, a few more tracks, slightly sweeter handling, it's on to a winner.
GT5 is a great game, 10% of the time. It's a horrific, painful, frustrating mess the rest of the time. It treats you like a disciple, you have to be willing to suffer to earn what it has to give. There are moments of sheer brilliance but they're buried in the mire of grinding out race wins, poor AI, and being forced down a proscribed path. Want to blat around the Nurburgring? Got to unlock it. Want to drive your favorite car? Not in this race series you can't. The upgrades and tuning have actually gone backwards since GT4! The whole game feels incomplete, rushed and awkward. Honestly, I love the GT series ,owned and completed them all ,but GT5 goes down as my most disappointing game ever.
so I'm back to playing and enjoying Forza 3 and anticipating Forza 4.

Like the "anti-fanboy" tone as well - don't have to choose which to "support"...
Like many on these boards, I've spent my money on every incarnation of Gran Turismo bar the handheld version, and enjoyed them all (arguably, less so with each generation). Likewise, I've owned every Forza, and have the LE of 4 on preorder from Gamestation. Enjoyed each of these, and the difference being, my enjoyment has increased with each generation (here's hoping that trend continues with FM4).
My 2p? Forza every day of the week, and twice on Sundays.
I own both but I rarely play GT5. It has way too many loading screens. You win a new car? Loading screen. You want to browse used cars? Loading screen. You want to modify your car? Loading screen.
Forza 3 on the other hand only needs a loading screen when you actually load a track before each race.
I played GT5 for a hour the other day and only managed to do two races because I was bogged down in loading screens and trying to find a car that fit the race requirements. Forza 3 you can do 10 races in a hour because it will automatically show you the cars you own that fit the requirements and even automatically tune them to be competitive with a single button.

Both are good in their own right. GT5 for me is still the best driving sim on console. Yes it has its flaws but once your pounding around putting in ever better lap times, it come into its element. Forzas depth in terms of cars tracks tuning etc is epic, but for me it comes at a cost of gameplay. I'm not saying gameplay is poor, its just not great. If in doubt, get them both. That seems to me what most people do.

says it all really......imho they (GT5) focused to much on "simulator" aspect and forgot it was a game, that people want to ENJOY playing.
I dusted the wheel off and spent an hour on the TopGear track the other day, trying different cars from my garage...you can't fault the handling and dynamics (esp with a force-feedback wheel) but the gameplay and long-term involvement/appeal of GT5 is sadly lacking.
