new PS3 (40 gb) user. Couple noob questions.

I've allways been a pc gamer, i like to build and update my game pc's myself and got a cracking machine at the moment on which i play most games. But i've moved in with the misses recently and she's got a PS3 in the lounge (the old 40 GB model) and on our new big tv it does look quite nice i must admit, plus i've just found out i can use my Logitech G25 wheel on the ps3 as well so i think i'm gonna buy a copy of Grand turismo 5 as that never came out on PC.

However as i've never really used a playstation or xbox i'm a bit confused about some things i've read online. Some websites say we can't play PS2 games on this PS3 but then some say i can download a software update which would enable us to do that. But then i also read that that could be "jailbreaking" and wreck the console, so not sure what's correct ?

And can i play games online on this version, or do you need to create some online account you have to pay for monthly ?

And any other ps3 tips or handy bits to know or also welcome. Cheers folks

What you have is referred to as a fat PS3 (newer ones are called the slim) Only the very first PS3's were bacward compatible so basically no you cant play PS2 games on it. You may well be able to "jailbreak" it but I think this may cause issues if you were to try and play online but am not 100% certain.

You need to create a PSNid (Playstation Network id) to play online and it is free to do, you should be able to do this from the console by creating a user account.

A couple of basic steps for you.

Create your account on the PS3. You can have 4 or 5 accounts per PS3.

Get your PS3 connected to the internet. The most stable connection is apparently gained through a wired connection rather than using the PS3's wireless capabilities. Try to (but not essential) use the PS3 as the DMZ which is a setting within the router which will allow all connections in and out without any interruptions, if your not sure how to do this you'll have to understand setting up static ip addresses for anything connected to the network.

Create your PSN ID. You'll need to assign the PSN ID to a Email account. Create a name, you only get 1 chance and cannot be changed so pick something really cool like FellowPazzini. Not sure if the account has to be confirmed from the Email.

Done. You should be good to go & ready to show some PH'ers how to really drive a motor. There's lots of tutorials for each step on you tube if it gets too confusing, unfortunately they're generally done by 10 year olds ha ha. Hope that's helped a little.

Don't bother looking into jailbreak, it'll give you a headache.

Am i correct in saying that we can still play PS1 games on this PS3 as i just saw the original worms on ebay as a PS1 game and that would be fun to play against the misses in the lounge.

I might just get that slimmer one with a bigger harddrive after a while as it is a noisey old bugger this ps3, i take it the slimmer models are a bit quieter ?

And can we also get the knict thing for this model as those adverts on tv did look funny ?

The ps3 has move, the xbox has kinect.

You can swap the hd out easily in both models.

My slim has less fan noise but the hd is loud as it is right at the front of the PS3

So is that firmware an official update then, or is that jailbrake stuff ?

I think that is an older version of official firmware and well overpriced.

So I assume it is possible to put custom firmware on that one (I assume that newer firmware prevents custom firmware installation) hence the price!

Forget PS2 games, they're old and they suck! PS1 games are available from the PSN store and of course they'll work!

The first time you connect to the PSN you will probably have a massive software update to do so don't fire it up and expect to play immedately. I made this mistake a few times, I think the longest I waited for an update was about 25 minutes.

When you get GT5 make sure you install the game to disk - it will take and hour or two and will be unusable in the process. Its worth it though as its painful otherwise.

I can honestly say I haven't noticed that much difference since installing. Loading still takes an age.

I downloaded that Driver San Fransico demo and quite enjoyed that, and as it's not out on pc yet i went to local game shop who had a good deal on, they'd reduced the price of the 160 GB slim line one to £ 179, and they take another £ 100, of if you trade in any ps3 or xbox 360. So basically i hand in the old 40 gb box thing and for £ 79, i've got a 160 gb slim line version.

Now on the link Pazzini posted above there seems to be a discussion about if you can play PS1 games on the slimline versions or not, and people don't seem to agree, so just wondering if anyone here can confirm/deny that PS1 games will still work on a slimline PS3.

And how much does an average game take up spacewise, i know there are 250 and 320 GB versions, but for an occasional gamer a 160 GB version should be enough right ?

160 GB is plenty an average game takes very little space unless you donwload map packs or extra missions etc but you will still have tons of space after doing that. People mostly start filling up there hard drive when they put films or music onto it.

Yes the slim will play PS1 games and you can also download them from the Playstation store for a few quid.

So you requesting me means..... You can see when i'm on the playstation and invite me to games or what ? Do we both need to have the game or is one having it enough to join in ?

I will add u as a friend so we can play games together like gt5. Most people on PH will add you. Then u can take part in the gt5 and COD games we play

I can't seem to be able to do this

When i put the game in it just starts, it said installing in the bottom corner for a few seconds but that was it. Went back into the playstation main menu but can't find any installing options there either.

How does one install a game to the harddrive ?

Before I installed it, every time I went to play in a seasonal event or online it came up with a message suggesting installation. Maybe it is actually installed as I think you have an option when first loading the game up whether to install or not.

I managed to find a option on how much memory there's free, and that states 129/149 GB free (on the 160 GB) model, and the only other 2 games i've played so far are Driver san fransisco and Ferrari challange.
