One for the serious gamers this, but is anyone else getting Dark Souls when it comes out?

I'm looking forward to this not just because I love RPG's but because it is supposed to be so challenging. I never got to play Demon Souls, this game's spiritual predecessor, but that was reputed to be tough. Anyway, it's out here on the 8th of October. Shouls be awesome!

I'm looking forward to this as I still remember the punishing grind of Ninja Gaiden II and how refreshing it was. It didn't really feel unfair until near the end of the game so I hope this game is at least well balanced! How I will fit this in with the rest of the games on my plate (Deus Ex, Bodycount, Shadows Of The Damned, Dead Island, Space Marine etc etc) heaven knows!
Its balanced in favour of the bad guys
When you die you back to the start of the level, with all the bad guys respawned and all the soul points you have gathered lost, unless you fight back to the point where you died. It sounds awful but actually works really well, it makes you learn the game rather than button bashing your way through it. The online aspects as interesting too, you can leave hints on the ground that other players can see even when they are playing solo and you can see where other people have died so you know that something evil might be around the corner. Oh and other people can invade your game and kill you when you dont expect it

That sounds a bit st.Still, I'm massively looking forward to this game, I love fantasy RPGs. Hopefully it will be tough, but not in the way that st JRPGs are tough (thou shalt not pass until ye level grind for 20 hours etc).

That sounds like a really bad idea, the one thing that I read about in Demon Souls that sounded crap.Oh and other people can invade your game and kill you when you dont expect it

If it's as tough or tougher than Demons Soul then it will be punishingly hard. It won't use cheesey tactics against you or do things that aren't fair, but it will punish you if you make mistakes and send you all the way back to the start of the level again and make you do it all over again, this time without mistakes.
And it will keep doing that until you manage it or you give up.

Its not as bad as it sounds, and works well actually. The invading player doesnt have to kill you, he can help you out if he likes instead, his choices effect if his world turns light or dark. Here is partial list of achievements:

I read a review on this, and an interview with the creator of it. He said that they had a demo on a a convention, and only 1 in the 200 odd people who played it could complete the level, so that's how hard it is.. (didn't specify which level).
It sounds good, but the idea of having to spend hours and hours and hours repeating the same level doesn't sound fun to me, in fact it is less fun than RPGs where you grind the same thing for hours and hours, as at least you gain something out of it, rather than just repeating the same level you keep dying on..

It depends what you want out of a game. If you simply want to mindlessly button bash your way through a game, as most games seem to be these days, then this wont be for you. If you want a challenge and enjoying getting better at a game through learning how to get through it then this is the one, a very rewarding experience. Its more old school, where games were a challenge and didnt hold your hand all the way through. It sounds good, but the idea of having to spend hours and hours and hours repeating the same level doesn't sound fun to me, in fact it is less fun than RPGs where you grind the same thing for hours and hours, as at least you gain something out of it, rather than just repeating the same level you keep dying on..

Challenge is good, when you have to think about it etc. But when it is literally a case of trial and error, with multiple repetition, then it is not. I'm a huge RPG fan, and my favourite on the 360 has been Lost Odyssey so farhttp://uk.ps3.ign.com/articles/119/1197278p2.html
IGN review.
They gave it 9.0 out of 10. It sounds brilliant.

Making your way through Dark Souls' death-trap world with half a health bar is hard enough, but the Curse effect stacks – so if you get caught again, you'll be down to a quarter of a health bar. A third time, you'll be down to an eighth. I know one Dark Souls player who lost something like 10 hours trying to make it to a healer when everything in the world could kill him with one hit.

The reviewer's job is difficult when it comes to a game like Dark Souls. I simply can't unreservedly recommend that you buy it. It's not a game that you play to relax. It doesn't care in the slightest about whether you're enjoying yourself, and it doesn't give a fig for your notions of entertainment or your mental well-being. If you just play games for fun, this isn't for you

I bought Demon Souls a long while back. I got about halfway through it with a weedy magic dude and gave up on it. Restarted it a couple of months back with a melee character and finished it today! I found once you were halfway through it, it got a lot easier. Great game although I am not sure I want to get sucked back into a similar experience . . . perhaps I'll just play through Demons Souls again
