Having been forced onto the old desktop PC by the untimely demise of my laptop, I noticed a small, innocuous icon on the desktop. GPL. "Ah, haven't played that for a while, see if it's still any good." I thought.

Only then did I realise how much I've missed this game. Simply amazing, and it looks great for something thats 6 years old.

Does anyone else have a strange liking for the BRM, even though it's crap, or is it just me?

We race the 1967 cars Tuesday evenings at 8pm and we race the new 1965 mod cars Sunday evenings at 9pm.

edited to add.................Doh!

I've not played GPL for years and got it when it first came out. Played it for a while but gave up as I just found it too difficult. I'm now finding myself drawn to it again but fear I'd be totally rubbish against you lot!

Maybe I'll try it again and compare my lap times (if I can actually do a lap without falling off!) against you guys. Do you play in full on mode with all driver aids off?

Also PWIG - the guide on your website doesn't link to anything!!

I'd heard it's a bugger to get installed and set up and must confess that this has put me off so far.

Has that side of things improved too now?

I agree! I've had a nosy round that link you posted FWD and it looks bloody complex! Is there a step by step guide how to get my current original (version 1.0.0.0!) to work on my Windows XP machine with all the tracks and updates needed to play with you guys?

Ok.....

Install GPL as normal.

Then go here http://trackdb.d2g.com/all-in-one.asp
this has all the necessary patched for GPL to make it run on fast PC's, better graphics etc.....

Then visit http://gplea.racesimcentral.com/ and get the newer cars.
There is a tool called GPLCSM which you can get from www.gplw.com/ that makes installing the new cars easy and even makes adding extra bits or options for the cars easy too.

Try things out, of course.

Then go back to http://trackdb.d2g.com/ as this is also the track database, anythng ever made is there. Download a few tracks, almost all of them come with track installers.

When his site is back up (his hosting server is down at the moment) visit this site - http://gpladdons.m4driving.sm/index_eng.htm it has a lot of good recommendations for tracks, sounds, cars updates etc... it;s what I have used.

And of course http://forum.rscnet.org/forumdisplay.php?f=36 for loads more things created by the community.

To get online racing you will need WinVROC from here www.vroc.net/

Additional things for online racing is the bandwidth patch, allows more cars to be seen when online - www.xs4all.nl/~westrab/gpl.htm

There is also a nifty program called carsound.exe which allows you to change the default GPl sounds (the gpladdons site above will tell you all about that). And you will need it to hear the new cars sounds of the 1965 era below.

Then when you have got that all working and want to try the 65 cars (which have better modelled physics for slow speed, in other words tyres that actually work ) go here. http://55and65.speedgeezers.com/gpl65/

Download and install. Then run Gem+ as that does the final installation and will sort out the 65 cars for you.

If you then start Gem+ you will get options of running the 65 season & cars or the 67 cars.

-------------------------------------------------------------
Now, this may seem like a lot but I have typed out everything I have done over the last 6 months since I re-installed GPL (I too used to play it in 1998).

Do things slowly and with patience, don't try to do everythng at once.

I also bought a Force Feedback wheel to race with, Force Feedback on GPL is brilliant and makes the game IMHO.

If I have missed something, sorry. Only human. But if you need help Racesim Central is the best place, just ask in the forums.

Oh and if you want to see how quick you are against others you could visit the GPL Rank website. Where you can upload your fastest track times, see if you are below the benchmark set for that track or what the fastest time is for a certain track.
http://gplrank.schuerkamp.de

Loads more links I have here, I won't go into descriptions, just look at them and see if there is anything you want from them.

FWD is our resident techy expert for GPL and he can generally answer any query you will have. If that all sounds too complicated I would just install the game and then the all in one patch that FWD mentioned. Leave all the car, sound and track updates until you are up and running.

The game is seriously frustrating when you first start but you must try to master it with all the aids switched off (no traction, no brake help and manual gears). With the aids switched on the cars are easier but they are far slower. You do need a controller that allows you to feather the throttle, brake and steer gradually. A keyboard with go, stop, left and right just will not work properly

When racing online it is generally the people who do not crash that do well so concentrate on staying on the tarmac, not on being fast. One accident can cost you 30 seconds so it's much better to be 4 seconds a lap slower and not crash

I am one of the slower drivers in the championship so any newbies will be seeing more of me and Pwig than they will of FWD and the front runners.

Please join, I'm getting lonely at the back

If any newbies want to get up and running today we could have an introductory race at an easy track like Monza tonight at 9pm in VROC

We 'golden oldies' can pick crap cars with full fuel tanks etc to even it out a bit. (FWD can be in a Rover 214)

Blimey! that's a lot of stuff. Cheers FWD, I've installed it ok and run the patch but I have however hit a slight problem which no one here can help with. I lost the power adapter that came with my MOMO force steering wheel!!! I think I left it at a mate's house unfortuatly the gits not in today so I can't play
