Steering wheels....5 minute wonder?

I enjoy the odd racing game on the PC, and I bought LFS a while back and got reasonably good with using the mouse. I've always been tempted to get a steering wheel (currently £199 delivered for a G27 from Play) but I keep thinking it might be a 5 minute wonder?
Any previous buyers care to comment how much theirs has been used? Shame its not 360 compatible, as that would add more 'life' to it for me with Forza 3 and Forza 4 (and no, I'm not going to stretch to a Fanatec wheel!)
If you play enough racing games to make the expenditure worthwhile, it'll be an awesome purchase. A DFP will offer much cheaper thrills though, if you can live without a clutch.
Setting a wheel up can be time-consuming, so you'll need to work out a quick way of doing it if you don't want that to put you off quick sessions.

I bought a Logitech Driving Force GT purely for playing F1 2010 on the PC. I can't praise it enough! It's completely revived my interest in driving games. It was also only £80 which is much cheaper than the G25/7. It still has the 900 degrees force feedback, and more buttons on the wheel IIRC - useful for settings in F1! If you don't need a clutch it's excellent.
Do you have the space for it to be up permanently? One of the main reasons I didn't really use my G25 or MS360 wheel was that there was no room for them to be up so it was always a PITA to "get ready" to play on the games.
So after a couple of weeks when the missus' comments started to make sense they just started gathering dust and I sold them on when I moved house. They are good fun but for me I wouldn't get another until I had a spare room or similar for gaming.

I too got a wheel a few years ago and really could not get on with it. But that was years ago and im tempted now. I mainly play Forza 9 times out of 10 and have considered a wheel recently. The issue I have is as mentioned here is "Where to put it". I have nowhere to mount it, i cant even sit down and have it on my knees. So that kind of put the nail in the coffin.

This, the OH is pissed off with plastic guitars and drums taking up the cupboards, adding a steering wheel would send her potty....

Ha... I've been trying to sell mine for months, had it as low as £175 and no bites. Refuse to use eBay because of the extortionate fees, they take their cut, then because they force you to use paypal, you have to then take a second raping there.It's still up for sale if you're interested and it's barely been used.
I bought a G25 about 2 1/2 years ago with the intention of becoming a serious sim racer, but then only used it about twice in 18 months due to the hassle of having to bolt it all to my desk, alter all the settings for each PC sim etc etc, it put me off using it. So earlier this year I wanged it on the Bay, and replaced it with a generation 1 Logitech DFGT - what a wheel. The only criticism I could possibly level at it is the pedals are crap, however I am intending to replace these. For £40 however I cannot moan, as it works with every PC sim I play, and also with all the driving games I play on PS3. Highly reccomend one if you're just starting out, as with hindsight I think the G25 was possibly too advanced for me and the stage I was at with my sim racing.

Do you mean Fanatec? They were on the Forza stand and have the official wheel. The "budget" version is set to be around $350 to $500 depending on pedals and shifter
The Elite version is set to be approx double the standard version.

There is a video in insidesimracing.com and Thomas md of fanatic gives a rough price, there is also a glimpse of a f1 based wheel with a chap from codemaster which looks cool but bet it'll be mega money!Didnt realise they where going to be quite so much.
I am guessing but knowing fanatec the price will probably be towered the higher end too
Just bought a Fiesta ST seat from the the local scrap yard and getting one of the engineers at work to build me a frame to support the wheel, seat and adjustable pedal box! It isn't going to look pretty but hopefuly it should be effective and luckily I don't have a missus to annoy by having it clog up the living room

Had been thinking about getting a G27 but it looks like it's not Xbox compatible. Is the GT Pro Xbox compatible or would i be better getting a Fanatec one? Also its my first wheel so it'd be useful to know if there are any tips for setting up as i've heard that they aren't quite plug n play.
Need it all up and running for Forza 4
