what is deranking how do they do it to you

Basically they will have a hacked patch installed on there console which gives them a drop down menu and when they press up or whichever button that is programmed to bring it down.
When they join a game and are host they can access that menu and do all sorts of things such as invincibility and rank people up and down if they wish. Deranking will make the person lose all there weapons, titles and emblems that they have gained.
This video will give you an idea of how it is done but the music is bloody annoying.
I don't think they can do it anymore seeing as they have patched the PS3 and brought out a patch for the Xbox the other day.

MW2 have now incorporated the new encrypted keys into there latest patch so unless someone cracks the keys there will be no new hack like last time.
There a a few mild hacks out which ive yet to come across online which let people change the map if they are host and small things like that but there is nothing out there like there was before.

On the Xbox it's done using a hacked console (jtagged), with a mod for the game (I assume you're talking about MW2 or Black Ops) that gives you the option to reset peoples rankings.
I think he may be mistaken about when it happened though; AFAIK you need to be connected to a host who has the hack, otherwise they can't do it. The deranking won't take place until you exit the lobby, so perhaps he didn't notice it until a little after it was done.
If you suspect someone may hack you, exit to dashboard without leaving the lobby and the deranking won't be saved.
