Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020
Discussion
I know some of you will laugh at this but I’m thinking about getting an Xbox Series X to run this. Having watched a guide comparing the specs to the PC specs the new series X looks to be about the same as the ideal spec PC. That’s pretty bloody amazing for a start.
I know that the experience won’t be quite the same with controllers, VR, Track IR etc but it should still be fun and there’s something appealing about playing it in the lounge on a decent 40” TV rather than locked away upstairs looking at a little monitor. Seems a much cheaper way to get into it too and expected price around £500 looks pretty decent to get you into almost top spec gaming without all the PC hassle. Anyone else thinking about trying it out on Xbox?

I find VR to be the same as sitting on the flight deck of an actual airliner, it is utterly amazing, but the current hardware isnt up to the job really, or my Occulus isn't.
I think it needs to be a couple of generations further on for me, no wires, better resolution and better control methods in the sim.
I am sure FS2020 will support it, they have said it will and we have to remember what a massive undertaking this is.
It will be a living, breathing platform and criticising it on day one is a bit short sighted given that the other sims have years of development, a lot of it by third parties. Of course it will take a little while to hit its stride, it has the whole planet as scenery.
Imagine going back to the eighties and showing the footage FS2020 ?
I believe it will become the standard for flight sims, however good Prepar3D, Xplane and whatever are, they will never have that level of world detail, and even if FS2020 is lacking in some areas I cant see that being the situation very long as the community and 3rd party developers get onto it.
Be interesting to see if MS allow the community to provide updates to the scenery, would be cool if people could submit their improvements, have them ratified and included and the whole planet get gradually updated to the same accuracy as the big cities like New York.

Dunno about controls but it's just possible the Reverb G2 might have the resolution thing licked, or licked enough. We'll have to see. I've used VR with wires and without. I didn't feel they were any real encumberance for sim type stuff, certainly for other things though. Cables may still be with us for quite some time at the top end. The amount of data transmitted to the screens may grow faster than wifi technology can supply it.
Strange there's no Xbox VR at all considering there's Windows Mixed Reality.
How will VR work? Will you have to take it off to press keyboard buttons or does it take account of that? Like do you reach over and "touch" the landing gear?
This is all totally new concept to me, sorry if it is an obvious question, HP website doesn't explain
And if you don't have gigabit internet, you can still play but the scenery won't be as good, right?
Thx

All good as long as Asobo deliver what they have promised.I think it needs to be a couple of generations further on for me, no wires, better resolution and better control methods in the sim.

Many flight sims allow you to operate cockpit controls directly by clicking on them as well as using keyboard shortcuts, so I suspect this is how it'll work on VR. All that remains then is the primary controls, which most people have on a controller. Of course, to do this you would need sufficient resolution to see the cockpit controls, plus of course you'll need a good memory if you fly different aircraft regularly, because unlike the keyboard, the controls will change locations...This is all totally new concept to me, sorry if it is an obvious question, HP website doesn't explain

Recommended bandwidth is 50Mbps, so nowhere near Gigabit. Someone may correct me on this, but I think slow internet means you just won't get the same detail.
This'll be sedate compared to Dirt. You can ease your way into it in stages if you do have problems with it, but some people never overcome it.
Of all the VR stuff I've tried, even Quest things leaping around, Dirt was the most potentially vomitous for me. It's fine now.

One thing about VR - how sure are you that you won't succumb to VR motion sickness
When I tried dirt rally for the first time I was super excited, it looked awesome. Put the car in gear, pulled off and didn't get to third gear without nearly projectile vomming everywhere.
For me, I had a Vive a few years back and played for several hours on the room scale stuff, didn't really affect me there. Not sure how I'll be in one of the stunt planes doing inversions and the like, but will start off in something nice and sedate first...When I tried dirt rally for the first time I was super excited, it looked awesome. The problem with VR is that it's just so expensive to buy the headset, only to find it makes you sick. I bought a cheap DK2 Oculus Rift a few years ago, but I've always wondered if it being old tech doesn't help the sickness, plus it smells a bit funny (I think the seller was a smoker).
My wife never gets car sick or sea sick and boldly announced she didn't want to try VR on Assetto Corsa, or one of the non-interactive demos, she said she instead wanted to fly a microlight on FSX. She lasted about 2 minutes

I'd only get a headset from a place with an ironclad returns policy. I made the mistake of ordering a Samsung Odyssey Plus from the US. When it arrived it perched on the tippy top of my head and would go no lower. The only one with an IPD range big enough and the design to fit me was a Quest. The Reverb G2 looks very tempting but the IPD isn't enough on paper and I'm not confident that style of strap would have enough room either.

Mentioned it above but I've plumped for the Reverb G2 and got it at the promotional price of £525, they are now up at £639 so if I really can't stomach it then I'm pretty sure I'll not take a loss on it.
