From The Depths is possibly the daddy of all building games. It is quite in depth though, it doesn't have a learning curve it has a learning cliff, thats on fire, with bears on it. Its not as bad as it used to be though as the game actually has some tutorials now and some pre made parts to start you out.
From what I can tell most people just play to build things, there is a campaign to test out your creations but judging how rare some of the achievements are I think a lot of people just enjoy making stuff.
That looks very promising....and bloody hard! From what I can tell most people just play to build things, there is a campaign to test out your creations but judging how rare some of the achievements are I think a lot of people just enjoy making stuff.
Their own trailer is pretty good.

- Elite Dangerous - Massive disappointment having loved Frontier back in the day, far too much running around inside stations
The running around part is "Odyssey" the newest, buggiest and least developed part of Elite. The old flying around Elite is still there and still fantastic. If you haven't met a Thargoid interceptor you haven't lived Left field suggestion is FTL Faster Than Light. It will in no way tax your hardware but it will give your brain a thorough workout during each session. Top down rouguelike spaceship management. It's absolutely brilliant.
I thought of two more that you might like.
Avorion is pretty much an X game but is voxel based so you build your ships. The gameplay has lots of elements of X series games, I am not sure how they get away with it.
Stormwerks Build and Rescue might also be up your street. Its supposed to be good but I just end up playing From The Depths instead of it.

I find myself in need of some new games, but not really seeing much that interests me at the moment so after some recommendations. PC's a i5 8600k with a 1080 graphics card so not top of the line but handles most things except the latest titles, and I also have a first generation Rift.
First off I have very little interest in first person shooters, which cuts out a lot of recent games (and hardware requirements), and tend to prefer builders and strategies.
Stuff I've played recently
- Kerbal Space Program - probably the best game ever in my opinion, hoping the modding community will be as good in KSP2
- Factorio - spent quite a lot of time on Factorio this year
- Witcher 3 - Not bad but gets very samey after a while
- City Skylines - I always get bored about half way through
- Civ - Been a fan since the Colonisation days, not played 6 that much yet
- X series - X2 and X3 were great, X4 was a bit of a disappointment and I never really got in to it
- Elite Dangerous - Massive disappointment having loved Frontier back in the day, far too much running around inside stations
- Dyson Sphere Program - expected to like it having loved Factorio, but lack of planning features is a pain and don't like the third person view
- Hearts of Iron - Loved 3 but it's steep learning curve. Bought 4 but haven't managed to dedicated the time to it to learn it yet
- Beat Sabre - Great game in short periods but not exactly the kind of game to spend weeks on
- Superhot VR - Great fun, too short.
Any recommendations for games I should take a look at?
Not in the same vein as the already recommended 100+ hour titles others have already mentioned, but a title I think you'd enjoy based on what you've said - riftbreaker. I'm not sure if others have recommended it from looking through the comments.First off I have very little interest in first person shooters, which cuts out a lot of recent games (and hardware requirements), and tend to prefer builders and strategies.

Imagine a mix of strategy base building, mixed with a little old school top down/twin stick shooter mechanic going on.
A frantic but satisfying mash up of the two genres that really does work, and its currently available on gamepass.
If you play it and dig it, it'll offer up a solid 30-40hrs worth of gameplay to you.

OP did you buy anythiing? We wasted precious seconds of our time recommending things.
Rimworld so far, as I'm away for Christmas and figured it would run well on my laptop while quarentining. So far it's proving harder than I expected Added several others to my steam wishlist to look at later. Not investigated the game pass yet though.

Have you tried Mount & Blade, Warband…it’s not hardware intensive. It’s a really great game.
Once large mod community as well.
One I'd heard of but assumed was a first/ third person hacker, but looks to have a lot more to it than that. What's mount and blade 2 like? Reviews reckon it was clunky as hell when released but did it improve? Once large mod community as well.
Wanting to get back into games, I primed myself on Steam, added a few to my wish list and promptly forgot about them. But this morning I've had an email from Steam about their winter sale.
I'm undecided about what to get, loved TTDX and Civ, logical kind of games. So I thought 'Cities:skyline' and Civ VI to be getting on with. £5.74 and £7.49 respectively.
Anything else like this worth grabbing in the sale?

On Civ 6 it's worth considering the Gathering Storm expansion too whilst it's on sale - the base game was great but Gathering Storm added a bunch of improvements ( e.g. the UN, extended tech trees, natural disasters etc..) and is well worth it at £8.74I'm undecided about what to get, loved TTDX and Civ, logical kind of games.
