Hi

How many of these were made and do they ever come up for sale as I've never seen one available?

I think four roadcars exist (One T440 was badly damaged in an accident and is still unrepaired) The one in Scotland was for sale recently I believe. The unfinished orange one, retained by NS, was for sale as a project at Racing Green but I believe it's now sold.

IMO I reckon the price is too high at 100k. I personally think 80k is where it should be - but maybe the owner would only be getting 80k if RG sell it at 100k anyway wink.

As much as I love TVR's - and there's not many people who have had as many as me, I can't see how anyone could justify 100k on one unless you are looking at hiding it away for 20 years+ as a possible investment.

And without sounding snobby, most TVR owners/enthusiasts are into TVR because they offer Ferrari performance for BMW money. In other words, the sort of people who want these cars probably don't have the funds. If a TVR is at Ferrari/Lambo money, most people would take less of a risk and go for a Ferrari or Lambo.

I'm prepared to get flamed, but it's just my honest opinion.

I agree.

But if I win that £120m this Friday this would still be my second purchase (Speed 12 would be no.1)

150 notes seems a bargain. biggrin

They are definitely very significant cars, the last PW creations, the only Tivs born out of a 100% race car, honeycomb and CF construction and with an English engine must count as possibly the last all English sports car made to date.

Very flamboyant prose and pricing, a classic Chas Whittaker. biggrin

So whats the difference between a Typhon and a T440R, except the 50K price?

Very little in reality, as three of the four cars of the T400/440/Typhon type all have different engines other than those originally specced/fitted by the factory.

Slight differences in body design and interior are the real differences apart from that very little as they all have the same chassis and body construction.

My opinion FWIW is that this car is overpriced especially as it's been rebuilt after a rather hefty shunt.

I'm not sure that there are any differences between the 4 production carsother than the earliest one having a minor difference in the central arm rest/trans tunnel of a scoop tray.

The 2 homologation cars PN 02 ZNG and PL 03 BXY were slightly different most noticeably the central dash pods were much less obtrusive into the cabin. PL 03 BXY has the two seater with the extra racing fuel tank so most likely to have been the actual Le Mans homologation car. PL 03 BXY is the one that Brundle used in his supercar video and its whereabouts are not currently known, although there is an unconfirmed sighting sitting hidden in Austria. PN 02 ZNG was re-painted in De Walt colours and was used as their promo car. It is currently sitting at Racing Green.

Of the 4 production cars, 3 were originally ordered to T440 spec with the orange one being the only one ordered to Typhon spec. All under PW.

The grey T440 was the only one delivered while PW still owned the company, to Lawrence Tomlinson.

Once NS took control he dropped the name T440 and also ultimately dropped the Typhon project (super charge and sequential box). He re-named them all Typhons going forward, took one for himself PN 06 EHT, sold one to a customer TYP 110N and never completed the supercharger project on AF 04 BYZ before TVR went bust.

So, in essence, there is no difference between the 4 cars and naming was dependant on who owned TVR at the time of customer delivery.

3 of the 4 cars have had new engines or rebuilds. PN 06 EHT (currently T14 HON) has, I believe, its original engine. The L4 DYJ car's engine was rebuilt by Str8six I think, TYP 110N by Power to 4.5SS and the orange one, AF 04 BYZ has a Racing Green 4.0 FFF2 engine.

Some additional info I've dug out now I'm in the office:

Build Number Original Colour Original Engine CC Original Number Plate Number Plate Changed To: Colour Changed To: Current Number Plate: Current Colour Current Engine CC notes
0a Red N/A PN 02 ZNG N/A N/A N/A De Walt N/A Red show car/prototype with the smaller centre console pod. This was converted to the De Walt promo car, number 91.
0b Fleetwood Bronze 4.0 PL 03 BXY N/A N/A N/A N/A N/A This car also had the small centre dash pod, synonomous with the prototype cars. It was driven by Brundle for his supercar video. Possibly a 2 seater as well.
1 Grey 4.0 N/A LNT 3 Grey L5 DYJ Unchanged 4.2? First road going prototype T440, essentially no different from the later cars.
2 Reflex Charcoal 4.0 PN 06 EHT T14 HON Unchanged Unchanged Unchanged Unchanged This was the first customer spec'd car but it was taken by NS to be his own and later sold. Since sold and in new hands.
3 Orange (Lamborghini?) 4.2 SC AF 04 BYZ TYP 60N Unchanged Unchanged Unchanged 4.0 Racing Green FFF2 NA Again, a customer car which was ordered to Typhon spec (SC and Sequential box). Was never delivered as TVR could not get the package to work before folding. Car was recently sold and is undergoing full restoration to T440 spec (non SC, non sequential)
4 Reflex Charcoal 4.0 PN 06 EHX TYP 110N Unchanged Unchanged Unchanged 4.5 TVR Power SuperSports Only car actually delivered to a client by TVR and was the replacement for the original customer car taken by NS for personal use

The two prototype cars were essentially the same but the red one was originally badged T400R and the Fleetwood one T440R. From memory this was once explained as being done so that the T400 race cars could be homologated for Le Mans, or similar. Both were on show at the 2002 Motor Show. It is believed that the Red one was a 4 seater while the Fleetwood one was a 2 seater with the long range fuel tank. These were the two proposed customer offerings.

Later, TVR claimed these cars would have either 440BHP NA and the red car was later rebadged as a T440R accordingly. They also announced that there would be a supercharged option with a sequential gearbox called the Typhon.

During PW's stewardship the cars for customers settled on this nomenclature. However the only ever car ordered by a customer to Typhon spec (the orange one) was never delivered due to problems in getting the supercharger to not overheat and the sequential box to not lock up at speed!!!.

When NS took control of the company, the supercharger and sequential box project was ultimately halted and the T440R name dropped and the model simply became the Typhon.

It was thought that the Fleetwood car eventually became the grey T440 but this now does not appear to be the case. There are stories of it being cut up and another recent story that it is in Austria, although that car is believed to actually be the Sagaris II. We hope to be able to find the ultimate answer shortly after speaking again with some of the ex factory and race guys as all of these cars were built by a small group, many of whom are still working at or near the site.

The very first iteration of these cars was the purple, 2 seater Tuscan R with the different rear end. This has been confirmed by the people who built them at the factory as being cut up and destroyed as per the law:

The same car but with a colour change for the 2000 motorshow:

The race cars of which we believe there to have been 7 or 8 were a mixture of these two designs, depending on when they were built but the majority were the latter design with at least 2 (the LNT cars) having wider arches than standard. But the race cars a whole different subject!!!!

I don't think any of the owners would mind this info going up as it is all public domain but please feel free to modify any errors or remove details about your cars if you are not happy. Original spec and build order came from the people at the factory who built them and ran the project.

He was talking about the one above that was the original road T400 then T440. It's not a race car, just done up to look like one. Has a totally standard 2+2 interior.

The current owner hasn't sold it, although I believe it is open to offers. It currently has no engine or drive train, I think I'm right in saying.

DonkeyApple - Many thnaks for the information. So is car 2 the one that was for sale at RG last year for £99K and did it ever sell? If that is the Scottish one then who has 4?

Griff - Thanks for the note about the grey one, makes the price seem even more OTT

Does anyone then know the whereabouts of 0b?

Car number 2 did indeed sell and was at both Chatsworth and TAG this year and that was the Scottish car. 04 I think is referred to as the Cotswold Typhon.

The history is all a bit flaky but but 0b could have been 0a resprayed and re-registered which means that it was the same car and as such became the De Walt replica.

It is pretty certain however that all the road cars are accounted for and were gathered together for the first time at TAG

Hi,

Car 2 is the one that was for sale earlier in the year at RG. I'm not sure if they sold it but it does have a new owner. He is a PHer.

I've not numbered the cars quite correctly as the orange one was the next built after the grey one and the two charcoal ones came after, but they were all basically built at the same time just registered at different times.

0b is the only mystery. V8 Grf may be correct but both those cars were on the NEC motorshow stand together for 2 years in a row. The first year the 0a was badged as a T400 and the 0b as a T440 and then the year after they were both badged as T440s.

If you look at the video on YouTube of Martin Brundle driving 0b around Goodwood I am pretty certain that it only has 2 seats. Originally, this was an option as it made room for a larger fuel tank for racing.

Car 4 is owned by TQ3 and is commonly refered to as the Cotswold Typhon, although the orange one which has been back on the road for about a month is also out in the Cotswolds.
