Being very new to the mustang ground, I have a few more questions - please forgive me if they seem totally daft!

For instance. I'm going to look at a 2005 GT(premium) 4.6 V8, supercharged(vortech) to 460Bhp, 34,000 miles on the clock.
it's a 1 owner car, pro sva conversion etc. loved and as usual - immaculate condition.

The one thing that, for reasons unknown to me that rings alarm bells is....its an auto.

I have nightmares(yes I really do!) of putting my foot down and the auto doing it's usual magic for a while and then suddenly the sound of mashing cogs and gears as its internals and magic parts self destruct.

So how reliable are the auto-trans in mustangs, should I be avoiding it like the plague or am I worrying over nothing.

part of me feels slightly dirty without a manual gear change wink

cheers,

Russ.

There are plenty of manual cars out there.
But I'd imagine they're running the same risk as any 'power-increased' car ?
AFAIK there's no problem with the Auto boxes. Just keep the oil changes regular. I say that with my complete lack of experience of high output Mustangs.

There have been one or two issues with bands in this box on HO applications but I'm not aware it is so common as to be an inevitability. Like any car, it rather depends whether you drive sensibly or whether you're a 12 year old burnout merchant.

I have a manual 460hp Mustang and while I bought a Stage 2 clutch and flywheel, the standard clutch shows no signs whatsoever of not being able to cope.

Is this a centrifugal supercharger as I think their power delivery is far more kind to the drivetrain than those who provide maximum torque from 2000rpm.

Have you been on MOCGB or www.S197.co.uk as we may know the car. We demand to know more!

I'm not technically minded so apologies in advance if the terminology is wrong, there is an issue with one of the pumps that sends oil/coolant around the inside the auto box on the 05 and 06 s197 GT's

I drive an 06 and it went, the guy that does all the stuff on my car replaced the part and the bits that were damaged as a result if it failing, cost me about a grand sterling equivalent.

The part he replaced was changed from 07 onwards afaik, can find out which specific part it is if that would help. Would be worth checking on one that is putting out ~50% more bhp than stock I guess.

I've had a hunt around and cant say I have seen this car anywhere else, that's not to say I've not missed it though.

Is the beasty in question.

looking at the engine photo, it is a centrifugal s/c(BTW - do centrifugal s/c's produce that wonderful whine?)

as for the burnouts and being 12, I'll leave that to the citroen saxo lads with their over sized exhausts wink

Cheers,

R.

Regrettably I can't see ebay in work as they are spoilsports.

In general, centrifugal superchargers don't whine a lot but I am basing that on my own Vortech installation which you really can't hear at all (then again they advertise it as quiet). The centri's also don't have a blowoff valve and vent back through the supercharger so you get a pfft but not a loud one. You get a faint whine but probably won't hear it over the engine.
I think the other centris are Paxton and Novi.

Centris are more efficient in terms of power required to operate them so should offer better mpg but the power delivery is totally different to a normal blower - think of it as a turbo on a stick albeit you never lose boost but it still builds to a frenzy at the top end like a turbo. Certainly suits a manual.

On the economy point, because the power builds through the rev range along with the boost, it does allow better economy and I get 24 average and have had 35 on the motorway. Assuming your Premium has the six-gauge pack and computer, bear in mind that the dash readout is in smaller USmpg so an average of 20 is really 24 UKmpg lest that scare you.

As LV51FER's indicated, we only know of one "band" failure, although I must admit the other reported failing is news to me.

The beastie in your link is from Newport Imports.....and Rupert (Roo) who works there, comes highly recommended.

That car is also black with Shelby Razors....and anyone that knows their S197s knows that's the best spec by far biggrin

If it's a daily driver you're after, an auto is the way to go. If you want a weekend plaything, go manual smile

It's mostly a weekend car, I might drive to work in it from time to time just to worry my colleagues >;D

After an excellent visit from John of Silverstone in his 2003 beast!. I am convinced that manual is the way to go with a supercharger already installed if possible.

patience is key!

Very nice indeed!

On another note.

LPG converted cars - should I avoid these? pro's and cons?

Look at the economies. If you're not doing high miles then it's doubtful you will recover the cost if you convert yourself (£1200 plus). Converted cars should be OK if done properly though you may lose your spare wheel to the tank.

monkey43 on S197 has his LPG'd and has done over 100k without issue.
Personally I don't much care about the fuel given the mileage I do and there's something slightly cheating about running a muscle car on LPG...

I've found a pre-converted car. I'm not worried about economy at all, it's manual and supercharged(to 450) with low mileage.

I'll quiz the guy about who converted it etc.

I may have to live with the cheating, all this hunting and hanging around is driving me crazy wink(pun intended)

I fail to see why the easiest solution is not on the checklist. Simply buy a 5 spd GT and have the supercharger added yourself this way you will be able to select from a larger pool of prospective cars. They do look great don['t they? Also superchargers for the 4.6 application in your car are widely and readily available. That is what i personally would do

That was my conclusion, I picked up a 2008 GT a few weeks ago. I've had a word with Mike at ModurStang(he's a genius!) and have been advised to go down the saleen stage 3 route with tokico shocks/handling.

Here She is.

Truly a pleasure to drive! I love it to bits!

Glad you sorted it. You now have a bona-fide pre-2010 classic modern 'Stang!
