Dear 'stang drivers!

Can't find any info on this elsewhere on PH so thought I'd start a thread - there must be someone who can answer me!

I'm toying with the idea of importing a Mustang or two from the East coast within the next 6 months. I know I should have done this in 2010 as I would have avoided the VAT increase, but even with the increase I've done my sums and it seems a worthwhile thing to do.

I'm pretty familiar with the imp/exp procedure, shipping etc.. the only thing I can't find info on is how to get round the MOT test, in particular the rear lights etc. What exactly is required? 1960's cars are exempt from the SVA test I presume, so will it just be the MOT I'll need to do?

Any particular info into how people have rewired their rear light clusters, how you've added side repeaters, foglights and whether there's any need to modify the front lights would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

The angle of the front lights just need to be altered I think. The car dosn't need coloured indicators due to it's age and i'm pretty sure you don't need to have side indicators installed either.

Most garages should be able to make the alterations to the headlights but i'd call around to be sure. Don't really want somone who's never altered headlights on cars no older than a couple of years experimenting with your new ride.

Thinking of going for a Fastback?

I'm currnetly having similar issues with my Cougar. Apparently you'll need white front sidelights and amber rear indicators (reds are fine for pre 65 cars).
Having spoken to my tame MOT tester he has said that amber running lights are fine, But when you change the headlights to RHD ones put white sidelights in. These are widely available for MGBs and Minis. And use the reversing lights with amber bulbs for the rear indicators. I haven't sussed having it switchable between legal and the less leagal sequential original units yet.read You don't need fog lights on cars built before 1980 or side repeaters on pre 84 cars.

Indeed smile Looking for a very particular spec so will probably be looking around till the right car comes about!

Thanks for the advice so far guys. Still hazy on the rewiring requirements for the rear clusters. And also whether or not modification needs to be done to the headlights, or if they need to be replaced with RHD versions.

But are we correct in deciding that 1968's definitely do not require a) side repeaters and b) fog lights?

Still hazy?

Headlights can be swapped for either standard 7" sealed beam units or halogen conversion units, these are widely available for Minis and MGBs etc (Land rover units don't have side lights). These should be a straight swap plug in and go. If you get them with sidelights built in you can run wires from your running lights and be legal with white side lights, amber indicators and factory looking with amber running lights.
Rear indicators just need the rear indicator feed run down to the reversing lights and fitting with amber bulbs.
You don't need Foglights, side repeaters or reversing lights for an MOT or as part of c&u rules.

All legal.

Easily sorted - with some halogens and relays
