Can anyone explain to me why a modern 4.6 V8 manual only has 5 gears?

I had the impression that pretty much any road car made within the past 10 years or so with atleast a 2.0ltr engine had 6 gears?

5 is enough for normal use.

The latest 5.0 has got six gears but the highest ratio is really only aimed at reducing fuel consumption.

Fair enough, I always prefer to have 6 gears if possible but whatever, not like another gear is gonna make a huge difference to the consumption of a 4.6 V8....plus consumption's not really somthing I was worried about :P

Don't honestly need them with a big engine (though actually all my cars have 5 speeds and I'm not convinced 6 is yet the norm). The GM cars have 6 speeds but two are overdrive. Certainly the Ford 5 speed is a million times better than the GM 6 speed in shift quality.
