Hey guys, for as long as I can remember I have wanted a ford mustang. Specifically, a 1966 289 in a darker colour. I know i'm probably going to get frowned upon for my age, but believe me I'm no boy racer. I was informed yesterday that one of my dads mates was selling his mustang. I, thinking it was a newer 'stang, casually asked what it was. "oh, its a 1966, all I know is it's a v8". Now, i've been saving for a mustang for yonks, and as I work for myself My annual turnover isnt too shabby, and, without disclosing the price, the car is within my grasp. I just have a few questions for you guys and I hope you can help me out.

1. Should I even be buying a car like this at 19. I.e, is it a bloody stupid idea for a 19 year old with 2 years no claims to even consider it.
2. Insurance wise, who should I be looking at? Most classic insurance companies wont touch young'uns until they are 21 or sometimes 25, any ideas?
3. How much would a car such as this cost to run?
4. In regards to LHD, how much adjustment would it take?

I can appreciate that some of you may be thinking i'm a complete nutjob, but I would really appreciate the help from you guys, to help this moment not pass by. Please understand that I am not a boy racer, I don't drive like jonny chav and this would be my baby. Most people my age lust after s14's, imprezas and skylines, but I have a completely different dream.

Thanks for taking the time to read this, I look forward to hearing from all of you. Once again, many thanks!

If you can find the insurance, just do it. I had a 455 cu.in. Firebird at 20, before kids came along, when I took a break for a while.
You'll be buying an appreciating asset (if you look after it), and will only regret it if you let it pass you by.

Failing that, can you give me the guy's telephone number? smile

You sound like you're quite wise for a 19 year old by thinking it through and throwing your dilema out to the masses for debate. All I would say is - "you lucky thing" - both for your age and oppurtunity and even if you bought it and garaged it for a year or two it would be a good investment. Driving a left hand car is no big deal if you take your time and cruise, which it sounds like you are going to do anyway. Take another pair of eyes with you just incase you miss anything, check inside those arches, the floors around the screen etc for the dreaded tin worm - Good luck!

Insurance is likely to be the stunmbling block. Try Flux and otherwise seek advice on www.mocgb.net. I'm not convinced they are practical as a daily driver as they were never that well protected from the dreaded rust but as an investment, you're pretty safe (coupes tend to be stable, fastbacks are going up fast) and you can offset the lack of depreciation against the costs.

Old school V8 - 15-24mpg, I'd say
LHD - very easy to get used to although many insurers won't touch you without LHD experience... rolleyes

cheers guys. I've done an online quote callbackamijig thing on adrian flux, and we'll see how that goes. Which insurance companies should I be looking at that wont laugh me off of the phone? Ideally i'd like to pay under 2 grand for insurance. If I cant insure the mustang at 19 then maybe it will be worth garaging it for a couple of years, until insurance gets cheaper. Currently I pay 1400 for a 2.8i capri. Thanks for the help once again, you guys are golden! If this whole plan goes to pot, what are the newer mustangs like? for example -

If you can afford it, go for it. Very cool car for a 19 year-old!

just got my insurance quote back from adrian flux. I cant quite believe it. I based the figures on this -

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1261578.htm

at 19 years old....2 years no claims....insured at 1725 quid. Waiting to hear back from my dad later as per the details of the car. This could be the most epic couple of months!

Currently driving a 2.8i Capri and wants a Mustang. I like you already biggrin

Also give A-Plan a try. Membership of the Mustang Owners Club (www.mocgb.net) gets you a 10% discount with those guys.

Definately join the club as there are a lot of very clever folks over there. Lots of good banter, too.

The new Mustangs are brilliant, but then I would say that wink

Running costs are not much different between the 210bhp V6 and the 300bhp V8 so, if you can stretch to the extra few grand for a V8, do it. They are likely to hold their value better and you can't beat the V8 sound. Insurance won't be much diffent, either.

Only thing to look out for is the SVA lighting conversion, but we can bore you with those details if you start looking smile

well, bad news guys, the 'stang sold today. not surprised, at 12k for an absolutely gorgeous example. So, the search goes on, I think im settled on an old school mustang due to the insurance cost of the new ones (havent massively checked yet, but I cant really afford the v8 anyway, however that v6 that I posted is absolutely gorgeous, although probably batst slow.

where else apart from here should I be looking for mustangs for sale? absolute limit really is about 12 grand, is that enough?

£16k would get you into this bad boy (V8)

£14k would get you into this (V6). This is the top end price for a V6, but it's a great spec, and manual too.

Both are for sale on the Owners Club website. That should be your first port of call as you can post up a wanted thread and you'll get loads of advice smile

There's a fastback in here for £12k but no idea what it would be like so seek opinions:

You're mad to pay £1725 for insurance in my opinion!

Seeing as those of us the wrong side of 40 pay about 100 quid.

Kids today wink

If you are willing to fork out for the insurance then do it, you only live once. I would definitely get some sort of snotter for day to day (for winter at least) though if you are buying a classic, not saying you can't use them every day it is just something I would do.

Do it DO it Do it, not that i am biased at all, i too had simmilar dreams, for me it was to own a Corvette, at 16 i promised myself i would own one before i turned 25, worked hard and at 23 bought a 1975 corvette, not mint but honest, insurance was £450 the first year with a severley restricted milage, 13 years on i still have it and still enjoy it, its still not mint but that allows me to enjoy it all year round, the other dream was a mustang, and 18 months ago i bought a 2006 V6 and use it as my daily runner, not a V8 but it still looks good dropped and on 20" and some 22 thousand miles later i still walk out the front door and smile as it sits there waiting for me, you have one life, live it dont dream it if you can.
