Sorry not strictly Stang, but anyone any advice if a 351 cleveland (which is going cheap) will drop straight in and mate to the bellhousing of my 390 1962 auto Galaxie? How different are these mills?
Any tips appreciated as the 390 is dead

Will probably physically fit, but it won't mate up to the bell-housing as the 390 is 'FE' pattern, and the 351C uses (essentially) the big-block 429/460 '385 series' pattern.

You would need to change the auto box too. Any of the hotter (4 bbl) Clevelands tend to be a bit too light on torque for a heavy car, although a 2 bbl would be fine (and not too slow). Interestingly my son recently bought a '62 TBird with 390 FE - but someone had replaced original Cruisomatic auto box with a C6 (off a late 60's/early 70's car). This was probably not as easy a change as one might think as the starter motor gear works in the opposite direction and the crossmember needed some mods!

Clevelands use the "Windsor" small block bellhousing pattern, some were cast with the bigblock pattern but they are mega extremely rare, all that I have encountered have been small block pattern.

Sorry, My mistake!loser
351M and 400M use the 385 bell-housing, 351C uses the Windsor housing.
I stand corrected!
