4.6 V8 engine noise on start up

Hi,
I was looking at a car yesterday with the 4.6 quad cam motor- on start up and until warm engine had a slight chatter from I am guessing the top end? - is this usual or a problem to watch out for? Many thanks

Well, I have a 4.6 litre 3-valve V8 in my 2005 GT. It's got 18k on the clock... and yes from cold, there is a slight chatter from the valvetrain, Very slight mind. Normally disappears completely within a few minutes. You can never hear it from inside the car though.

A cheap oil filter with a poorly designed Anti drain back valve is likely the cause. Replace with Motorcraft filter it will stop.
