Warning - snake danger!
GT500 Super Snake launched
Another week and another tuned V8 muscle car. This time it’s the turn of Ford Racing and Shelby Automobiles, who will use newly-developed Ford Racing GT500 performance packs to help transform a limited number of 2007 and 2008 Ford Shelby GT500’s “Super Snake” coupes. The Super Snake package will include enhancements to the Ford Shelby GT500’s handling, styling and power; tuning options will range from a warranted 600 HP V8 to over 725 HP (unwarranted). Only a limited number of Super Snakes will be built per model year at the Shelby Automobiles facility in Las Vegas beginning in late 2007.
“My team at Shelby Automobiles is always working on new ways to build better performing cars” said Carroll Shelby. “I told them that I wanted to build a vehicle that could blow the doors off of most anything on the planet. By partnering with Ford Racing, we’re giving enthusiasts a Mustang with that level of performance.”
Working together at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway and in Dearborn, Ford Racing and Team Shelby developed the aggressive suspension and engine package specifically for the car.
In 1967, Shelby American built one 427-powered GT500 “Super Snake” for Mel Burns Ford. Carroll Shelby drove it at the Goodyear test track for tyre promotion film production reaching lap speeds of over 150 mph and a top speed of 170 mph.
“The name ‘Super Snake’ is legendary because the one that Shelby built was the pinnacle of muscle cars in 1967,” added Amy Boylan, president of Shelby Automobiles. “We’re bringing that concept forward 40 years for customers who own a Ford Shelby GT500. We’ll give their car amazing new capabilities.”
The GT500 Super Snake package will include:
- Ford Racing Supercharger upgrade kit (SuperPack 600) producing over 600 hp and 590 ft lb of torque
- 6-speed manual transmission with 3.73:1 rear axle ratio
- Ford Racing performance exhaust system
- Ford Racing Handling Pack offering unique performance suspension tuning including Dynamic adjustable dampers, lowering springs, tuned stabilizer bars, and front strut tower brace
- Shelby-designed Alcoa 20-inch wheels
- Ford Racing short-throw shifter
- Baer 6 piston brakes with Shelby cast calipers and larger rotors
- Front brake cooling ducts
- Unique carbon composite hood featuring classic Shelby design
- ‘Shelby’ lettering across the front edge of hood and rear boot lid
- 'Super Snake' vehicle badging
- Carroll Shelby signature embroidered headrests, floor mats and other Shelby designed components
- Official Shelby CSM dash plate
In addition, while the full Super Snake package will be available exclusively through Shelby Automobiles, many of the products comprising the Super Snake package will be available from Shelby Automobiles and Ford Racing starting in June.
We can't wait to try it...
Top Gear were so full of crap when they compared the wheel hp figure to the engine hp figure in the name.
i suppose an Evo FQ300 should actually be called an FQ250?
or the Clio Sport 172 actually be called a Clio Sport 155-or-there-abouts?
nonsense :P
I was waiting for someone to say that, I hope you have flame proof clothes on.
Well it says "Ford Racing Handling Pack" So I doubt it will be to shabby.
Hi there
The Mustangs do handle well, but the Shelby's are not as good as the standard Mustang GT.
The Shelby needs to go on a diet fast, it weighs over 1800kg, thats 200kg more than a Saleen or Roush.
Fair enough the Shelby has huge power and will tune easily and reliably to the 800-900BHP region on the stock engine but all that weight over the front end and the fact there is so much of it does the car no favours on the corners and hence a standard Mustang GT is quicker on the twisty stuff.
The Ford handling pack is nothing special, there is far better suspension kits/options available that would indeed further help the Shelby with handling and traction.
My advice is just get a Mustang GT, sort the suspension, add your own supercharger and aim for circa 500BHP. The result will be a much more focused car over the Shelby and more or less as quick.
Obviously if you want huge power and just want straight line performance then the GT500 Snake Bite is a great car, as these cars with around 800-900BHP will run 9s 1/4 miles.
1)If the Ford GT has an aloominum engine why does the Mustang (Shelby) have to get the iron block? Please correct me if I'm wrong.
2)Isn't it also bereft of an LSD?
Really like them - but find the lack of a 'proper' model in the line-up perplexing.
I'm off to buy a Lotto ticket - and it'll be a Roush if it comes up.

Hi there
1. The iron block in the Shelby is a lot stronger and can be easily taken to 1000BHP. The ALU block tops out around 600BHP on stock internals and will only see 750ish tops with re-inforced internals, still plenty though.
2. All the Mustangs have an LSD. The Mustang GT, Roush Stage3, Saleen all use the same LSD. Saleen due however offer an upgraded LSD.
Just an opinion.
Think you may be reading the wrong section of this forum if your looking for a exige.
The point is most guys in the US race on the strip, not on the track.
Of course, if you did want to go to the track you could take a Roush which beat many "fine" european cars around Evo's test track.
You could even take the FR500 race car which is currently spanking BMW's and Porsches the US Grand Am series. Oh no, sorry, wait. I've just found out these race cars have live rear axles instead of IRS so they must be crap. Clarkson and the British motoring press say it's suspension from the middle ages - and they're not biased at all.
Oh and it may be infantile.....but big HP, getting the backend out and doing burnouts are FUN. Anyone remember fun in motoring? BMW, Audi...anyone?
