I am off this wednesday to spend the day in the Top Gear studio with one of our 2005 Mustang GT's. I received a call from the BBC last week asking if I could bring a mustang for a static shooting in the studio. They are reviewing the Shelby GT500 this sunday for those who are interested. I will give you all a wave !!

I really hope it's Richard Hammond testing the Mustang. You just know that Mr C will rip it to shreds. Still, didn't he vote it the most important car in the world once?

Looking forward to the review.

They asked if they could drive the car and I said not a chance even with captain slow driving. I don't undersatnd any company who would let them thrash the car. Manufaturers can do it as they dispose of the car cheap and its' all good advertising. It costs to replace tyres, brakes sometimes engines ! We don't get to sign write car and we don't get a mention on the TV. At the end of the day you are stuck with a car that every gear head in the u.k knows has been thrashed to an inch of its life. I had 5th gear ask me 6 months ago and again I said no.

Hi m8

I've heard there will be a Roush and STD GT on test as well, is that right?
I take it they won't be going round the Top Gear track then unless they have borrowed someone elses GT500?

Also what is your email address?

Hi they are putting a shelby Gt500 the Ford press car blue with white stripes around the track. They asked me for a mustang for static shooting in the studio as they did the mustang back 12 months ago. They also asked me for a supercharged Roush which we have but not one with the handeling pack. I send them to Roush and I think they now have a car for the show. Should be a good show and enjoyable day tomorrow. My e-mail is james@atlanticsportscars.com

Hi m8

So did they take your Roush round their track without the handling pack you mean?
Or did they take a Roush round the track with handling pack, if so was it a Stage 3?

Are they also gonna time the stock GT round the track too or not?

I am going for filming tomorrow 10-6pm. Our mustang GT will only sit in the studio as I don't want it driven. Our 3 roush mustangs will be happily tucked up in our showroom. The Ford Gt500 press car will go round the track and possibly a roush if they have found one in time from somebody who will let them take it round the track.

You'd have to be a complete idiot to let them track your car. BBC will not give you any advertising. I can't tell you how many times TV production companies have requested cars - they think that because the car is on TV somehow it will benefit you.

Yep the BBC are a bit cheeky if they think people will let them thrash very expensive machinery and give nothin in return.

If BBC were to say offer to cover cost of any damage or just give money to cover what a new clutch, tyres and brake cost wether or not they brake would be more fairer. As without a doubt going on track is gonna hammer those parts of the car.

I wouldn't even let them have one for the studio - first thing they do is sit on them or poke them and slap the interior.

I think James should be applauded as surely any coverage is good coverage for the Mustang community.

Hey all,

Back from an interesting day at top gear. I had the vehicle locked at all times so no poking and prodding and no audience trophy hunters stealing bits. I stood beside it the whole time like security when the audince were in. Well the review will be fairly typical,They got there prices wrong, they said i Gt500 handeling wasn't great, Roush they said was good and they didn't say what great for money they are. The good the Shelby was 1min 30 sec round track and roush 1 min 28 nto bad for two cars that can't supposedly handle !!!Well above some cars at twice the price. The bad they put the shelby on a trailer rolling road and it came out at 440 odd hp not sure on this one as one of my customers put his vortech mustang on a similar trailer and came back saying 390 hp then put it on a proper workshop rolling road and got 478 hp as expected.

I did say to them if they need any advice on prices , engine sizes etc just to ask but they didn't. Watch ou for the opening section of the mustang I am the guy in the light blue shirt over richard hammonds left shoulder grinning constantly like an idiot.

The rear wheel hp sounds about right to me. My Vortech is supposed to produce 462hp but a guy in the Us reckons the stock tune delivers around 390 rwhp. Similarly, a Procharged Mustang good for 500hp allegedly put out 427hp on a US dyno. They do vary but the transmission losses account for the difference.

It's difficult to be definitive about US power outputs because accuracy doesn't seem to be compulsory. The 2002 SN95 Mustang Cobra was only supposed to produce 395hp but Muscle Mustangs and fast Fords got that figure at the back wheels and even more with the airbox removed. Similarly, the 2002 Camaro SS was quoted at 325hp but produced 317 on the dyno making it one of the world's most efficient transmissions (or more likely it produced the same power as the Corvette LS1).

I'm pleased to see the Roush made 1:28 but even that doesn't really tally with Clarkson's DVD when he raced the blown Exige against the Roush Mustang as the Exige only just won. Was it wet or dry?

Hi there

I heard the Roush did not have the handling pack fitted, is that true? If so what is the handling pack as I would have assumed a Stage 3 Roush would have all the suspension bits anyway?

The Top Gear rolling road dyno must measure power at the wheels as 440RWHP is about right for a Shelby GT500.

Gotta remember though at the wheel figures are not accurate at all, tyre type, tyre pressure, wheel size, rear-end gears all effect power at the wheels.

If it was the usual blue Roush 420RE, it has everything on it but last time I spoke to them, they didn't have any control arm extension backets to correct the pinion angle and hadn't adjusted the camber from lowering it - there again neither have I as it apparently doesn't waver a great deal at that level of lowering.
