Calling LuS1fer /zektor/evolutionvalet and all '05+Stangers

You may have spotted my infrequent posts here (whilst I've been waiting to sell my car), so I can finally order my 'Stang.

The good news is, that though this has taken longer than I'd hoped, the '07 Cali Special has come into being and is almost ready to be ordered.

For very fair money (IMHO), you get something a little special and it already pretty much looks the job (though CS6 wheels are calling . I guess selling the 17" FR polished 'bullitt' style alloys will be pretty easy in that regard!

Anyway, having built my last few 'performance' cars, I'm looking forward to tweaking the 'stang to free up some of the obvious potential.

So question is, using an '07 Cali as a baseline, what sort of stage-1, 'must-have' performance mods would you recommend? This applies to engine, brakes and suspension as, to me, the looks are sorted.

Exhaust change is a given and I've heard the Borla and LOVE it But cold air intake/ECU flash etc. are all straightforward and 'easy' ways of getting a few more hp.

Oddly (for some), I'm not actually mad keen on supercharging it. I like the old skool V8 sounds to be unpolluted by charger whine (I had a .383 Supercharged smallblock in my GTR pumping out 630hp ).

Think low, wide, fast and demonic (but I can put my family in it) - and that's the car I'm after

You'd think so but in fact they only fit the 2005 up Mustang really so you need someone with a new Mustang to buy them.

I actually prefer the normal Stang to the Cali but they're all great looking cars.

The louder the beetter as far as I'm concerned. I paid a lot of money for a pair of Corsas. Basso profundo at the top end but no drone. However, when I fitted the supercharger, I lost the benefit of the top end howl as I left it behind. I had a custom stainless exhaust fitted by Prospeed in Cardiff for less than £300. Now I can enjoy the rumble round town too.

The Vortech SQ in mine is imperceptible and certainly doesn't whine. It's far more like a turbo. Stock Mustang at the bottom end and avalanche at the top end. However, I believe the 2007 cars are different to the 2005/6 as some supercharger manufacturers haven't got one for the 2007. Something to do with computer changes but I'm sure that won't last long. While supercharging isn't for everyone, the Mustang is around 3500lbs and 300hp is only "enough". However, there are cold air kits and tunes which can increase the output but for me, if you're going to have a muscle car, you need the power to back up the looks and 300hp is not demonic, it's adequate.

Choose your rear child seats carefully then (if applicable) as the curvature on the Stang's back seat makes fitting a child seat difficult. I have a Britax Kid and with the seat extended vertically so my 6 year okld daughter can sit in it, it doesn't fit in the back properly. A booster is OK though.

The stock suspension is too soft. It allows too much roll and the car will visibly rise under acceleration and dip under braking. Great for yeehar merchants but hard on weight transfer and on the brakes. The first thing you should do is get some lowering springs and suspension that works better. I used Tokico D-Spec adjustables as most of the tuners use them and they're great as you can adjust them for UK roads. Lowering springs are varied - BMR, Roush, Eibach, Saleen all do them. I used Roush because I liked the blue!

Wheels are fairly crucial although if you have bullits, they look great but the stock tyres are 235/55 and waaay too tall. You need a bigger wheel and a lower profile. I use 275/35's all round which are ideal. I used Goodyear GSD3 18's on my Camaro Z28 and Dunlop Sportmaxx 20's on my Mustang. Both very good tyres but £250 a corner.

You can upgrade the brakes but if you do make sure you buy wheels that can accommodate them. The stock brakes are pretty good in terms of short stopping distance but are prone to fade like most of this ilk of car. Bigger wheels will give you better cooling and better suspension will stop the car loading up the front brakes. I've bought some grooved Powerslot rotors and some Hawk performance pads which worked well on my Camaro Z28 but I won't fit them until I need to.

The only irritating thing on my car is the Metco billet lower control arms which have started creaking and annoying me. I should have stock with the BMR ones.

My son is only 18 months, so he's consigned to the rear seats for a while yet! We've already tested his baby seat in the 'stang. It fitted a treat

Looks like some sloppy editing of quotes! I hope my daughter isn't 7 by the time I get my 'Stang.......I'm not waiting 5 blimmin' years!!!!!!!

Glad to hear the seat shouldn't be a problem, although I'd much prefer to have a "proper" switch to activate/deactivate the passenger airbag. Or at least I'd like the sensor to have a warning light to say when it detects a large bottom/requirement for airbag to be on.

You're right - it's gonna be black

- but they are a pain to keep clean! Still, a few coats of Harley wax should make that easier to deal with

There is a warning light telling you when the bag is on or off.

Hi mate,

Order not in yet - going to shop around for best price, but spec. is sorted. May also try to order some performance parts as part of the deal. I was reading up on this stuff earlier and wondered what people's opinion of the Ford Racing stuff was? The exhausts for example are actually Borla's. I was considering ordering the FR handling kit too - any opinions?
