Plato kills the Mustang Gt 500 on Fifth Gear
Discussion
Saw tonight the piece and it was quite bad
... and at £50k (the price I see on several UK magazine not the £40k that Plato mentions) I have made my mind up for good.
I'd rather have an Audi RS4 for the SAME money, more exclusivity and nice interior, exterior, etc. not to mention the technology and a better ability to fight depreciation
For £50k you can have a classic 80s V8 Vantage Aston Martin. Sure not 500 bhp but... 400 ish?
Do I still fancy a Mustang? Sure, the classic Fastback will do for me but the new one is out of the picture big time. I will buy a 1967 Fastback one day...

On Classic American no 187 Nov 2006
page 45 - Bill Shepard Mustang - GT 500 - from £50,000 OTR
also someone else on this forum posted prices above £50k
However £10k more or less after last night (for me, of course) will not make any difference.
Plato is maybe not exciting like Clarkson to watch on TV but he is a serious driver... his verdict was without appeal. Only the look is saved and guess what, you buy the car for the look. Then when you look at the original even Classic American (same issue as above) concedes that original is better for the look.
Unless I am missing something...

Here's a thought - go and drive the car and make your own mind up about it
I wholeheartedly agree that at 50k it's too much, but once supply sorts itself out (read mid-2007), it should be possible to import for the £35k mark.
Or just get a bog standard GT for sub 20k and stick a supercharger on it - plenty of kits availalbe and voila - 450-500hp
A Mustang will never compete in the handling stakes with a Porsche/RS4 etc. but don't you see - that's the point!! Give me a squealy, tail happy old school muscle car over a teutonic uber efficient autobahnstormer any day. All IMHO of coure

bang for buck cant be beaten , its a muscle car cabable of huge power if you tune it some more ,you aint even got to pull the motor apart for 700 plus horsepower cos Ford made it properly unlike most car manufactures in Europe. it might not be finished off like a beemer but it will blow that thing where the sun dont shine.
if you watch the video beare in mind a mclaren f1 only runs 11s

Having got round to watching it, I didn't think the review was that bad. OK so it doesn't handle that well and the interior is low-rent plastics like all American cars. Is that a surprise? That's not the point of it, which is one or more of a) it looks great and b) it's quick and c) it's not German and d) there isn't one on a driveway somewhere in every street. It's not going to be everyone's cup of tea, but that's no bad thing. I didn't care much for the sound mind you. Far too much supercharger whine and not enough V8 roar.

Agree with you wholeheartedly on this but these things are supposed to be CHEAP as well.
Are they cheap in the Staes and we just get taxed OR do the americans get taxed heavily on imports which make their stangs look cheap in comparison?
BTW, Evo tested this car in last months issue along with Super Daytona Coupe and found it wanting. They complained the diff was too loose, not enough audible drama and suprisingly found the low down grunt a bit limp..
Audi RS4 - What, after all the problem's EVO has had with theirs?
You can buy a Mustang GT, lower it and fit 20" wheels (as I have done). Looks far better and will turn more heads than an RS4.
Get Roush UK to fit their offical UK supercharger kit to the car for about £4.5k (as fitted to the 420RE). And you end up with a car that will do 4.5 seconds to 60 mph, 100 mph in just over 10 seconds.
Far more "entertaining" rear wheel drive handling over the Audi.
And you get to save a whole wodge of cash!

I think Mungo may have been implying the RS4 is just another iteration on the A4 theme....albeit a pretty extreme iteration! At least, that's how I read it.
Interesting point about re-sale on the Mustang. I hadn't really thought of that, but it's a valid point. Still, I tend to keep my cars for a longish period (5 yrs plus) so this doesn't come aroud too often. I guess as long as you're active in the Mustang clubs/forums, you wouldn't have a problem selling it on......but for what price is another matter. But that's great for me, as I always buy cars when the depreciations done it's best (or worse).
I love the RS4, especially in Avant form. In fact, it's on my list as the "everyday" super car when I win the lotto! BUT, it would share garage space with my real toys

"Used some oil" happened to be enough oil to worry the EVO staffers.
I give my Mustang GT a hard time. The oil level has hardly budged.
An oil problem in a high performance car IS a cause for concern in my book.
Ok, agreed some of these problems could be attributed to mere niggles.
But I wouldn't want ANY niggles in a £50k car, especially in a supposed quality car like an Audi.
No such "niggles" in my Mustang GT. Admittedly, some Mustangs have a problem with fuel filling at some stations. A sensitive filler neck I believe. But that's hardly a cause for concern that will prevent you from mashing the throttle at every opportunity.
