Guys,

I would appreciate your input. Definately set my heart on a Saleen Mustang S281S/C. I have been quoted around £45,000 by a dealer here for one on the road. Now I know they retail around the $50,000 mark so with the pound vs dollar at 1.90 now is the time to buy.

My dilema is do I use the UK dealer who will take my truck as p/x but pay an inflated price, or try and sell the truck privately and go the self import route.

I would like to try the self import but as it would be the first time, dont want to get caught up with hidden charges etc.

I imported a mustang two months ago so here goes.
In the end I did a partial private import, let me explain.
I sourced the car in the states myself, dealt with the dealer and did all the money transfers etc.. When the car was ready to be shipped I had a shipping agent ready to go.
I contacted the company I intended to use for the sva work and was pleasantly surprised to find out they could do, not just the sva but as little or as much of the shipping, customs clearing, sva, registration etc...as you wish.
In the end I had them organise the shipping, customs clearing, sva and registration so all I had to do was collect the car and drive away. It cost me approx £500 to £600 in admin and handling fees on top of the duty, vat,DVLA, sva work etc..,but I still saved about £2000 over what I would have paid from an importer/dealer here.
Plus they do one of the best sva conversions you can get.
It was so much easier having them deal with customs and excise and the DVLA and was quicker and less hassle than doing it yourself, since they`re doing this every day and know the system.
I think all in for the shipping, sva, registration, road fund, plates etc.. it came to £2500 on top of the price of the car plus the duties and vat.
If your interested then contact the David Boatwright Partnership on 01376552399 or visit www.boatwright.co.uk
They are a dealership also so that option is there too.
Hope this helps

Kev

I self imported when I moved back from the US last year (slightly different and easier as I had no tax to pay on coming back) - but have a look at the attached link for details which I found very helpful.

www.import-car.info/index.shtml

I note you are in Norfolk so you are well served with Mildenhall Auto Services for the SVA, and general servicing (speak to Jean). I am getting my Mustang serviced there again soon because their rates are very competitive. Think also on purchasing some flowmaster mufflers for the car in the US, but fit after SVA in case it impacts your test pass.

E Mail me with any queries - as a matter of interest, how much do you charge for a full detailing on a Mustang (picture in profile)?
