Auto box in 2015-2017 5.0 GT
Discussion
Just curious at the moment, but having another think about mustangs.
I much prefer the looks of the pre 2018 GT, also factoring in some serious savings to be had getting a 2015-17 and not getting the 2018.
However, I much prefer autos to manual cars, and whilst I imagine the new 10 speed is great, how bad or surprisingly good is the old automatic box in the pre facelift?
Any input from owners is much appreciated, many thanks

This is probably worthless to you, but I had a rental Mustang in Washington DC in 2013 I think. It wasn't the 5.0 but had a slush box which was good. Very good.
Personally I'd have the auto. The world is moving to autos for good or bad and they are far from the clunky rubbish they used to be.

Currently living in America and have a 2016 Ecoboost auto.....(burn him!)
I was planning on getting a manual but after test driving both manual and auto Ecoboost back to back decided to go for the auto. I also drove manual and auto V8 back to back.....they both sounded really good but I couldn't justify the price difference for my daily driver.
After 2 years still pleased with the auto box. Very relaxing for the daily comute. Having found some twisty roads (yes they do exist in America!) and had a play, clicking the gearlever into sports mode works the best and makes for an enjoyable drive when conditions allow.
I had not previously considered getting an auto (and have two other 'toys' with manual boxes).
Definitely worth having a look and test drive to make up your own mind.

I have a two year old gt convertible with the auto box, love it. In sports plus you get the down blip and quicker changes.I was planning on getting a manual but after test driving both manual and auto Ecoboost back to back decided to go for the auto. I’ve got a 2017 GT auto. The box is ok. It changes up fairly smoothly and you can always put it in S for the downshift blips and use the paddles as well. Before the Mustang I had an Audi RS4 with the S tronic box which was better but aside from being a bit clunky in slow moving traffic sometimes the Mustang box is perfectly acceptable.
I have a 2017 GT 5.0 with the auto box and generally very happy with it.
My only very small issue is when going down hill at very low speeds, such as parking garage ramps etc, then there can be a discernible clunk sometimes, nothing dramatic but just a falter in an otherwise pleasant easy to use auto box.

2017 Auto here, often find myself putting the box into race-mode for the full V8 thrust and down-shift blips.
Personally I wouldn't go back to a manual in any car, but obviously it's highly subjective.
I'm finding myself very drawn towards the 2018 car, but the price to change has turned from a small gap to a chasm.

I have just spent a week with a 2018 Mustang eco boost, which was great fun but I also noticed quite a discernible "cluck" during the last two downshifts when stopping, but thought it might have been a fault with the car. It wouldn't stop me getting one though!Gassing Station | Mustangs | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
