Upgrades ... worth what at the end?
Discussion
I am just thinking about some upgrades to me car, specifically supercharging, suspension and exhaust. Functional as opposed to aesthetic. Not a cheap
business, I wouldn't expect it to be.
But I wonder what the effect in terms of the car's value would be in say 3 years if I was to "invest" in these upgrades. Whilst I appreciate that I am not going
to get my money back (I am doing this for my own enjoyment by the way), what sort of percentage return could I expect?
Are there "desirable" upgrades on a Mustang? Anything to be avoided?

My experience with the S197 was that effectively over three years the car lost no value but I got nothing back on the mods (if you want to view it that way). So purchased used for £22K then supercharged, suspension, GT500 body kit, exhaust etc etc. Sold three years later for £22K. This was when it $2/£ mind so a Whipple blower was £3,600 landed. Happy days
The UK mainstream market tends to frown on modifications as mainstream insurers don't particularly like them.
Many specialist Mustang insurers like low mileage policies or LHD.
So I think you would pay more, on insurance.
The S197 2005-14 was rather more meant to be modified as the standard item really did need uprating.
I spent about £8k in mods on mine and I figure that, after 11 years and with only 14k on the clock, it is worth £3-5k over a stock car of similar condition. Indeed, the agreed insurance value is £20k whereas a stock V8 is worth maybe £15-16k tops.
Much depends on the buyer. A member of our club has upgraded his to 725hp and I dare say that when he sells it, there will always be a market for it because the alternatives are ... well, nil really, save perhaps a Hellcat. However. a 500hp car will have more alternatives like M4s or the S197 GT500 or Corvettes. So go large or go home.
