rattle on corsa 1.0 chain when cold.
Discussion
i recently bought a 2005 1.0 corsa for my daughter with 50,000 miles. When i inspected car before purchase i was aware of common fault with chain rattle but this one didnt rattle, appeared good car so bought it. seller changed oil prior to me picking up. after week or so of running chain started to rattle from cold start. After 10 minutes or so stops rattling and very quiet. i have flushed engine replaced with correct oil and filter and still rattles, only when cold or sat for while. Could this be a blockage to oil feeder for tensioner or chain. Any ideas would be gratefully received thanks. Paul
These are common for timing chain rattles. A timing chain kit it available now, insist on a genuine kit though there is some very poor pattern kits out there. Usually the timing chain rattle does not go away though, it either does it or does not. Are you sure the hydraulic lifters are ok, they usually quieten down once the oil is up to temperature. Becareful using flushes, they often cause more problems.
thanks for that. Dont think its the chain. I know the chain tensioner is oil fed I was wandering if the oil flow to the tensioner could be obstructed with the oil getting through once warmed up and moving tensioner. If it is do you know if there is an additive that i can put in oil to clear oil ways. Help!
The chain it self wont be the problem as you correctly mention. The issue will most likely be the tensioner, guide and slippers.
Not sure any addaitive will be the solution. Try a doing another oil change to make sure that all the old oil is out and replace with 5w30 fully synthetic oil that it should be run with. Finally the oil supply to chain is done via a guide located top of the engine inbetween the cam sprockets. Take off the cam cover to expose it, a through clean and refit could help too.

thanks once again. Dont know whether i fancy taking rocker cover off. Im not at all technical. I did ring Vxhall they told me that the 2005 model should be run on 10 40w semi synthetic oil ? Someone else suggested that there could be a build up of sludge in sump blocking the pickup. Is this likely? I have put some wynns hydrolic lifter treatment in today. Dont think it will help much but cant do any harm!

All Vauxhalls have come with 5w30 fully synthetic since 2001. The previous Corsa with the same engine had 10w40 so it certainly would not harm it. I strongly suspect that previous owners have possibly neglected the servicing or used poor quality parts. I aint knocking aftermarket parts as i sell them myself alongside genuine ones too however there is some real crap stuff out there. You often get what you pay for.
The problem with flushes etc is they often break down coatings on seals/gaskets, striping carbon deposits causing increased wear and play in components despite the jargon on the tin.
It might be necessary to take this one to a qualified technician who can accuratly diagnose the issue. The trade is very quiet these days I am certain by shopping around you will get a very competitive quote too.
