Clio V6 to VX220 Turbo
Discussion
So I have caught the track bug and I need a car suitable so Elise/Exige/VX220 Turbo are my three main choices !
Now I am partial to a bit of forced induction (previously owned an R5 GTT and a Fiat Coupe 20VT) so the VX would be a nice change to the Clio V6!
I have still to get rid of my Clio but should have 14-15k to spend on a lightly/sensibly modified VX. What kind of cars will I be looking at getting for that money ? Low mileage 04 cars maybe ? Maybe a stage 2 on coilovers? Is insurance an issue with these cars?
Cheers Sam

Insurance should be cheaper than any Lotus
I wouldn't worry too much about low mileage, condition is more important. Having said that, 40k miles seems to be the norm to require a suspension refresh, so bear that in mind.
You'll get a decent turbo for your price range, but you could also get a cheap na and supercharge, will work out about the same cost. Just depends what you prefer, and if you can be bothered to get it done.

I disagree, the bilsteins are great for the road, just too soft for the track.
If you're serious about track, then NTRs are the way forward as they can be rebuilt/upgraded to whatever spec you want, the compromise is cost.
Horses for courses sir...as the OP wanted to know if they were any good on track days.If you're serious about track, then NTRs are the way forward as they can be rebuilt/upgraded to whatever spec you want, the compromise is cost.
Ultimately the Gaz or Nitrons will be better if your going to do numerous track days

I came from a Clio V6 (Ph1) to a VX220T and could not be more happy with the choice. Much like you, I wanted something I could drive on track (without fear of spinning at every corner!). I tracked my V6 a few times but did not enjoy it as much as my previous 172. The VX220T is very much a different beast. It loves to be driven hard and is much more progressive near the limits. I have done a few track days and the Ring in mine and its a ridiculously capable machine and gives the big boys a serious run for their money.
Insurance wise it cost me slightly less than my V6 so that should not cause you an issue. If you are going to track it I would recommend doing the suspension (running GAZ Golds approx £450) and get a decent fast road/ track Geo setup done (approx £200) and it will be magic. Another essential track mod is an ABS off switch which is a DIY job and will cost you less than a fiver. Typically the ABS cuts in far too early and seems to get worse as it gets hotter. I found it a real PITA when you are driving hard.
For your money you should be able to get a nice Turbo, possibly even stage 1/2. They are generally pretty cheap to maintain as many parts are generic VXL or shared with the Loti. I find it cheaper to run than my old V6.
Good luck - look forward to seeing pics!

Loads of great info and how to's on VX220.org - can be an arse to search though and I tend to find it easier to go through Google and add 'VX220' to your search query.

Have you got the details of how the 'ABS off' switch is fitted?
You may know this ... you can also just disconnect the abs sensor to the front offside wheel & plug with silicone sealant to stop corrosion. Did this after trying on a trackday, and finding it safer for emergency braking on road too. Only downside is warning light stays on but a little silver tape over it and you never notice.
