I'm ordering a new astra SRi next week & i'm stuck between the choice of engines. I only do 10-12k miles a year & I'm wondering if i should go for the diesel over the petrol? Any advice?

Depends which petrol model. The non turbo versions are atrociously slow, but the 1.4T and 1.6T is fine. I've not driven a 1.3cdti but the 1.7 and 2.0 diesels are fine.

Looking at the 1.6 turbo or the 160bhp diesel, what are the pro's & cons for each?

I've driven both, but it was a while back. I've ordered a 160bhp diesel auto Elite, but you'd be happy with either to be honest, the petrol 1.6 turbo really flies.

Cheers, I'm used to diesel at work, but with the low? miles I'll be doing, petrol still seems to be the best.

I've got the 150BHP 3dr, and it's a great engine. Only snag is that it's more thirsty than I'd hoped for, so I'd be very wary of the petrols.

I have an Astra H 2.0 SRI Turbo 170 petrol and I'm only getting about 27mpg out of it. I think diesel is the way ahead, fuel isn't going to get any cheaper. Probably better residuals on the diesel too.

The 2011MY Astras start build on August 16th, and appear to be decontended compared to 2010MY - a conversation with my dealer today confirmed just a couple of minor things being removed, but there were many he said "that doesn't affect you" over and over. SRi loses its door ambient lighting, and the console cubby loses its lid.

What is your typical journey?

For that annual mileage it won't make a huge difference on fuel costs, but if you're doing nothing but short journeys then you'll end up spending more time back at the dealer than on your drive...
