Hi Guys

Firstly a bit of background info:

We recently purchased an astra coupe 2.2 16v on a 51 plate 89k on the clock. We picked it up from aberdean and drove home to brighton - no probs. Weve owned it for about a month now and its been running fine - although it has been using a bit of oil.
The guy who sold it to me owned a arage and they replaced the head on it with a recondidiotned one as it had low compression on cyclender number 1.

Now the problem
Anyway like i wasy since weve owned it, its been sweet as a nut and weve put over a 1000 miles on it. Yesterday i changed the oil and filter. Unfortunatly purchased the wrong oil filter so put the old one back in and drove down the road to get the correct one.

So having changed the oil and using the old oil filter, i drove the car and it was fine.

Got home and changed the oil filter over with the new one - (its one of the catrige types mounted half way up the engine).

Drove down the road and the engine sounded awful like metal on metal - no oil getting to the top of the engine.

Ive investigated the problem as best i can: put the old filter back in and run the enine, cranked the engine over with no filter in to see if oil is getting to the resovoir where the filter site but nothing.......not sure what to do?????

What could i have possibly done wrong here? Its like the engine isnt getting oil pumped around - but how can an oilf filter change make a diffrence

please help

Paul

nope there is no oil light on and it was perfectly fine when I just changed the oil as I had to run down to the garage to buy the oil filter with the old one still in it. The problem only arose when I changed the oil filter... any ideas?

Do you have an oil pressure guage? If so does the needle flicker when cranking it?

The previuos owner changed the head as it had low compression on a cyl, maay be this was caused by a cracked piston ring and part of that ring has now found it's way to your oil pump.
If still no joy then call Sheldon North (Andover hants)01264 771234 Vaux specialist before you kill it.

I meant did the car have one.

The test you did by cranking it was a good idea, but i think it needs to be a sealed system for the oil to come up to the filter.
Im not clued up on the 2.2 at all. I have the C20let.

Wouldn't be a bad idea to ask for some advice on migweb

The the oil pressure relief valve in the pump it stuck shut, there is a air leak on the pick up pipe and/or the meshed end of the pick up pipe is blocked.
Did you use an oil flush before you dropped the old oil? as this can do more harm than good.

no i didnt use an engine flush. Whats odd about this is I changed the oil and then drove down the road with the old filter in and it was fine, I was only when i put a new filter on that the problem occured - it makes me think that it is like an air in the system or somthing, but having run the car not a suasage just horrible noises and looking at the oil filter housing it looks like no oil has ever got to the filter.

As above.
Do you still have the old one to compare it to?
Can they be fitted back to front etc?
If you have the old one to put back in, and if ok it would prove it's the filter at fault.
