Hi all. Just posting on here to question the extremely helpful PH knowledgebase.

Bought the Design version of the above car from a dealer just over a week ago. It seems a nice car and i'm enjoying driving it (more nippy than my older Bora disesl).

I have, however, noticed that the turbo seems quite noisy. There is a very defined whistle from around 1500 revs (more noticable when running from cold) that pitches up and down with the speed of the car. There is also a sucking noise when accelerating at around 2 - 3000 revs.

Now, I know that turbos can make a bit of noise, and the sucking may be from the engine induction. But are these engine turbos generally considered to be a little noisy, i.e. you can hear them working from inside the cabin?

Edited to add - it's done 68000 miles and there was a new cam belt and water pump, service and MOT done as part of the deal.
It's probably nothing to worry about (and the car is has a year's extended warranty anyway) but it does seem a lot noisier than my old Bora diesel. Anyone think this is a problem or is it just normal for this engine?

Many thanks and sorry if this post sounds daft. I've never owned an Astra before so have nothing to compare it to. smile

Thanks.

I got it from a dealer and when I picked it up I queried it with the salesman. He said that the engine just makes that noise, that's the nature of the beast as you say. I just thought i'd post on here to ask if anyone else had been told that and it was indeed a problem.

I thought i'd run it for a few weeks and see how it went. So if by end of this week it's still noisy i'll just give their service dept a call and see what they say.

Thanks again! smile

I was cleaning the Astra on Sunday and overheard two other 1.9 CDTIs as they went past. Both had the whiny turbo like mine (and yours) so I feel better about it now.

The car is in the garage on Monday, however, as it has developed a few faults. There is something loose in the bootlid, it has failed to start 5 times (remedied by pressing the unlock button on my key fob) and when you start it from cold it sounds like a belt is quite loose. Oh yes, also noticed last night that there was a funny whirring sometimes when I pull off in first gear. Hopefully they will be able to fix these niggles quickly. smile
