Astra starting issues

My father's '57 plate Astra has developed an intermittent crack on startup. It's only started since the cold weather came down. Any thoughts?

Sorry it is a 1.6 petrol, 2007MY. He says it's coming from the passenger side.

Is the crack only on startup or does it continue once the car is running? Engine lights on the dash board that should not be there under normal circumstances?
