Hi All,

My better half currently has a 04 plate new shape Astra 1.7TD as a lease car which is due to go back in 3 weeks, so we're going to be buying her a replacement.

She's been really happy with the Astra and is quite happy to have another one. Our budget means we can a another Astra club but with the 1.3 diesel engine on a 06 plate. You also get the 6 speed box which will be nice.

I just wanted to check if anyone has one and how they've got on with it - is it a big enough engine for the the size of car and what economy have you been getting please?

Cheers
Paul

My mate has one, its poo.

Go for the 1.7 CDTI <150> I had one of these as a hire car and it was brill. MPG is not much different.

Another firend also has the 1.4 petrol, its not punchy but does the job better than the 1.3d

Our company car fleet has been 1.7 cdti life a/c's (80 bhp). My replacement car comes next May and next time around it will be the 1.3.

I know a few people that have them already and they are a bit poor with not many miles on them, but just like my current car once they have a few miles on them they are ok.

We had a few of these come through our firm and they are not very good at all, power wise they dont have any so you have to hammer it all the time. Reliability wise expect it to go wrong a lot. Also be aware this engine drinks oil almost as quick as it does fuel, Vauxhall actually recommend that you check the oil every 300 miles! which is more often than refueling it.

Interesting thread, not driven one, but i would have thought with all that torque (170Nm) everyday driving would be ok, even though outright power is low (73hp) or is it the 88hp version on the astra.
Always curious between the fuel economy of a small low power hardworked engine and a tickled powerful larger displacement engine (1.9 CDTI 150/120).

My other half does the most of her driving in town / built up areas so i was hoping that the torque of the engine would be ok for quite a large car. I must admit I've wondered about the economy difference as you've said..

Thanks for all the replies people, much appreciated. You've certainly given me something to think about! wink

We've got to get something sorted out for the end of the month so we've got time for a test drive or two smile. The 1.3 clubs I've seen are quite a tempting price at the moment, about 6k for a two year old 10k miles one owner car, but maybe we'll keep looking for another 1.7. I think the 1.9 will be out of budget unfortunately.

Cheers
Paul

An old thread know but for the benefit of anyone coming across it on a search I just wanted to say how good the wifes 1.3 CDTi Astra is contary to the reports in the earlier posts.
I find it suprising nippy, economical and comfortable around town and a quiet 70mph @ 2k revs on the motorway and I`m not easily pleased biggrin

Adequate around town but utterly gutless at motorway speeds.

Theres no need to get personal bud, you have your opinion and Ive got mine and have to admit that it wouldn`t have been my first choice but I bought it as Cat D and I`ve found it to be ok.
Its not a bad engine by any standards, I remember the Opel eco speedster

I recently handed back my 1.7 cdti comapny astra which was the forerunner in performance and output terms to the 1.3 cdti.

The big issue I had with the car was overtaking on A roads. Even with 80k miles on the clock it was gutless and quite frightening at times. As a motorwat cruiser even with 80 horses it was pretty good so I would have thought the 1.3 cdti would have been equal if not slightly better.
