Hi, I've been offered an ex-Police Omega and I was wondering if anyone has bought one before?

Do they come with any paperwork/service history? Are the Police even required to MoT their cars? I'm a little concerned that there will be no evidence of a belt change - which is obviously going to add to the cost.

This one has a valid ticket and the last registered keeper was the Police. However, it's 10 years old - do Police keep cars for this long? I guess that it could have been a close support/pool car and therefore wasn't used much? Mileage is less than 100k apparently too.

Also - uprated shocks and brakes - are the brakes just fitted with harder pads or do they have different calipers/discs?

Cheers.

Is it an ex-motorway car or a liason vehicle?

They are maintained very well.

No Idea.

Sold by the Thames Valley Police 3 months ago.
It's got 84k on the clock and comes with full service history from plod - last work carried out about 83k.

They're all looked after very well, just the patrol cars will have big holes in the dash and things like that. You don't always get an official stamped service book either which can make it harder to sell on, but they are serviced religiously to the schedule.

All Police cars are very well maintained throughout their life and can be a good bargain when sold on. As it is a Miggy make sure the self levelling suspension is working. Shouldn't be much wrong with it. Quite low milage too which is great!

Go for it yes

you're probably right but it's only £500 - RWD, Manual, LSD, 200bhp, so hoping that it will be the bargain that it sounds.

At £500 it must be worth a go. Plod cars are well mantained and even if there is something wrong with it at £500 I cant see you loosing a lot, if anything.

OK - Picked it up on Saturday evening for the princely sum of £450.

Looking through the service history - it appears that it was used as a patrol car in the first year (60k!) and then as a skid-pan training car for the rest of it's life. Which would explain the grumbling from the upper steering column on hard lock......doesn't sound anything mechanical or the steering rack, more like something is rubbing behind the upper steering column. I can live with it for the time being. A little hesitant under part throttle below 3k but pulls strongly all the way to the redline after that. I'm hoping that a service, change all the fluids, clean the breather pipes, plenum, ICV etc will cure the hesitancy.

Needs a couple of tyres and a sidelight bulb and that's it really. Full interior - just the ashtray and stereo is missing.

As this car has been bought primarily to take the 'ring in a couple of weeks, I think that it would probably be a good idea to get uprated pads as I reckon that the 'ring will kill them pretty quickly, what with the weight of the car. Mintex do 1144's for it and then there are EBC's, Tarox, Black Diamond etc. Won't know what condition the discs will be in until I take the wheels off. They are cheap anyway. Definitely change the brake fluid and flush the system. Maybe just get some new OE pads and take them with us? Will be easy enough to change them if we trash the ones currently on there.

As this is very much a budget effort, if anyone has any tyres or preferably wheels with tyres, any kind of stereo equipment (head unit, amps, speakers etc) which they can let go for a nice price, that would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,

Andrew

To be honest a lot of the Vx V6s suffer hesitancy on part throttle lower down the revs, they're very restricted as standard on the airflow, but it's nothing a decent panel filter, cold air feed and a good going over like you mention couldn't sort out.

That's good to hear, I was hoping that it would just be a trait of the engine. Makes a nice growl above 4k when the dual-ram thing works.

Any cheap and easy tuning, such as improving airflow as you mentioned, that can be done?

Well ripping out all the resonator box crap and getting a feed to the front of the car with a decent panel filter like an ITG helps a lot, the car isn't quicker in that sense, just more responsive. And it's a cheap mod.

You could try the Vectra Sport websites, a few people on there have put Omega engines in Vectras and done tuning.

Excellent, thanks.

Any idea what to do with the brakes? Any experience of running uprated pads on them, as opposed to OE?

OK - you know anything about VX wheels?

Do all 5 stud VX & Saab wheels fit all models or are the PDC's unique on different models?
