Oil and lights

hi i have a vauxhall astra 1.6 8V mk 3
and it seems to use alot of oil
does anybody know the reason/solution for this.
it runs on 10/40, the garage said they would try a differant thicker oil is this advisable?

also
when driving at night the lights have start to switch themselves on and off only for very brief moements. It only seems to happen twice and only when going up hill.
any ideas?

taking it to the garage on tuesday so hopefully should be sorted!

The engine is designed for 10/40 so I wouldn't alter that. Older Vx's are known for electrical gremlins such as this. Silly question but I take it there is no oil leak?

no i dont think there is a oil leak
just seems to go through the stuff
