Corsa steering column

My dads got an old 1997 Corsa diesel with loads of play in the steering column (you can move the wheel back and forwards) hes had two columns from a breakers and both seemed fine on the car but when taken off have play too although not as much. We have checked all the other stuff on the steering and it seems fine. Any ideas?
