omega 2.5 td - conked out - any ideas

bit of a long shot here, but a mate of mine owns a omega 2.5 td. he bought it last week off ebay, it conked out the same day and now wont start.
he has had to go to norway, so ive been left to try and sort it out. we had it on a code reader and the garage think its the fuel pump - they have quoted 2 grand (is a main dealer) to fix it, which is too much for a 600 quid smegma.
my question is this, does anyone one here know a quick 'bodge' fix to get it at least going so i can drive it a few miles to get it off the side off the road?
it will start after some cranking, when it does it puffs a huge cloud os smoke out, then conks out, it wont rev up at all.

Oh come off it if its only 3 miles then drive that distance at 10-15mph all the way and do it at a time of day when the road is totally empty 2am etc then there will be no sudden braking required. The hand brake works well in the Omega I assume?they dumped it in the local train station car park and want nothing more to do with it.

Or on the other hand hif you have roadside recovery they will take you home in it or get it going!
This your one mate...? If so you might want to tell them a bit more about be a bit more about the engine not running and the fact you've only just bought it - that's unless you can bodge it to do those 3 miles home.........You've only got 4 hours left to work it out...

ITS GOT T&T LOOKS LIKE IT HAS HAD REPLACEMENT H/LAMPS BUT THEY ARE OUT OF FOCUS OR SET WRONG AS THE ARE NOT VERY GOOD
BAD POINTS ARE
GETTING SCABBY ROUND THE EDGES INTERIOR WANTS BURNING AS ITS SO SCRUFFY (USED AS MOBILE ASHTRAY +NEVER CLEANED)
RATTLES ON SUSPENTION WHEN DRIVEN SO SOME WEAR ON LINKAGES BUSHES ECT
IN MY OPINION BETTER FOR SPARES THAN REPAIR AS THE ENGINE PULLS STRONG WITH NO UNWANTED NOISES.
ON SAYING THAT IT HAS TRAVELED UP AND DOWN THE COUNTRY WITH NO PROBLEMS
CAN BE INSPECTED BRING OVERALLS TO TEST DRIVE J34 M1 LESS THAT 10 GOOD FEEDBACK BIDS WILL BE REMOVED AND BLOCKED UNLESS FULL CONTACT DETAILS INC LANDLINE ARE RECEIVED BEFORE BID IS PLACED,10% DEPOSIT BY PAYPAL WITHIN 24HRS CASH CLEARED FUNDS ON COLLECTION WITHIN 7 DAYS WILL NOT END EARLY NO BUY NOW SO DONT ASK
