Can anyone give me some mechanical advice??
I have a beautiful astra cabriolet but she is a little disgruntled!
On the odd occaision the engine managment light comes on and she gets a little lumpy but then goes off for a few days. She can be REALLY lumpy sometimes at low revs and other days be fine. She tends to be a little lumpier when shes on the last quarter of the tank but the engine managment light will come on even if she has a full tank sometimes. Starting to smell of fuel a bit now over the last week and recently has had another problem.... Drive it quite hard then switch off and she won't start again... turns over but doesn't start... bizarre.... could be a few hours before she restarts or even over night. I had to get her towed back to the house the other night as she wouldn't start but went to start her this morning and shes on the button straight away....HELP! A previous mechanic a while back said it is just because she has a primitive fuel injection system, but admittidly i haven't been to see one since its got worse as i don't want to be turned away saying there is nothing wrong if she is having a good day!! Has anyone had a similar problem?? I am thinking of getting the fault code diagnosed but wasn't keen on getting a main dealer to do the work as i have had bad experience of getting ripped of and not solving the problem with previous cars. Not many of my engines about so want someone who actually deals with them still. Thought of courtney but they are too far for me as i'm down near brighton. Thanks for any replies!!

It is possible that you have got water in ya tank, have you ever ran it reeeeeeeeeally low on petrol, or get to 1/4 .. go lumpy so fill up again?

I'd be tempted to empty ya tank out. fill up with clean juice and wang in some injector cleaner too.
As the car sits, the water n petrol could seperate, meaning when the next time you turn it over, it sucks neat fuel and runs ok..... when car is bumping and cornering again, it will all get mixed and the combustion wont be good.

A pal's fiesta did the same, he blamed Safeways petrol but who knows how water might get in there.

If it's not that....... then the dreaded words are in play..... MYSTERY ELECTRICAL FAULT!
Danger Will Robinson.

I had a 16v GTE once, but mine had a roof cos i'm not a hairdresser heheheh

Having been upside down in a pal's metro....... and having been upside down in a Porsche 924... and having been upside down in a GTE... I LIKE MY ROOF!

Sitting in A&E while a nurse (not even a young foxy one) pulled buts of glass sunroof out of my head with tweezers, I am very happy to have a 944 with a solid metal lift-out roof.

Solid above my head, and even solid when the roof panel is removed, and no glass! Perfection!

Probly electrical... which means it could be anything.
Usual questions...... when was it last serviced?
Check all the Earth connections are clean and good
make sure the dizzy cap n rotor arm are in top nick
try some injector cleaner in case yuo have dragged some shit up into the fuel lines

You say it runs lumpy.... does it ever drop onto 3 cylanders?

what you need to do is "flash out the fault codes" follow the instructions on...
www.topbuzz.co.uk (then click on Reading Fault codes link)

Failing that goto www.MIGWEB.co.uk, lots of technical info on Vauxhalls there.
