OK, after accepting the Vauxhall website is a pain in the arse and wont quote you a cars fuel ecconomy until you have chosen a specific model and engine, I went to compare the Astra SRi CDTi 120ps and 150ps.

According to the Vauxhall website, they both achieve the exact same fuel ecconomy despite the different power outputs. Does anyone have a brochure handy to quote me the numbers in that? (if different)

Any real world combined ecconomy figures available from owners?

From the brochure as I have never driven either:

urban 120/150: 38.2
extra urban 120/150: 57.6
combined 120/150: 47.9

the 120 is 8 valve the 150 is 16 valve

re chipping the 16 is good for economy

but my signum does 30 mpg at 100 mph

so use of the right foot destroys economey

2004 Vectra SRi Estate 150 did an unerring 40.5mpg. Decent engine, refined and less rattly than VAG equivalent. Vectra itself was appallingly built from flimsy materials and dealer usually unable to fix simplest of electrical faults. Engine regularly mis-fired in the 1600-2000rpm range and DPF gave lots of trouble. Hope Astras are better built!

hi i had a astra sri cdti 150 on the 55 plate for 3 months well i only had it 2 of the 3 as it was at the main dealer for one month trying to fix the very very bad running problem . i have now got a very nice BMW 330ci.the astra would never do over 40 mpg even if i drove it like a old man the dealer attitude to the fact it would just stop at any time was the computer says there is not a fault.they did have to admit it when they had to get a low loader to pull it of my drive.it was crap never was right lost £3500 in 3 months !!!!! if you are thinking if getting one dont buy anything but a vx allso it gave me a very bad back

Odd that as when I tested the 1.9 CDTI 120 SRi 5 Door XP it returned 40mpg and I drove it very hard on the test which I wouldnt do if it were my car and on those roads. So I could easily see 50 and on long runs 60mpg.

Driving style has a lot to do with it 7 if you look at the instantanious mPG readout 2000rpm is the best revs for the economy a higher gear will use more fuel likewise so will a lower gear.

Having had experience of both power outputs I have found them to be pretty much the same, save for the fact that you are more inclined to drive quicker with the 150bhp. Great engines.

Funny this thread came back up just as I've been pondering a new car again.

The Golf has to go (bored of it big style). Current options:
Ibiza Cupra TDi
BMW Mini Cooper mk1
Mondeo ST TDCI
Astra CDTi SRi XP 3dr
BMW E39 540i Sport with LPG conversion
BMW 330Cd
Audi A3 2.0 TDi Sport
Audi A4 3.0 TDi S-Line Avant
BMW E38 740i Sport with LPG

(in other words, if I wont the lottery, I'd need a fecking barn sized garage, so many cars make sense, and I can pretty much get my head around paying for all the above by one means or other).

Think there is some massive test driving sessions to be done.

I found the 120CDTI to be fine !!!
3 adults up it pulled well enough very good economy a jolly good car. Would like to test the 150cdti to see what the difference is as at the end of the day 30bhp isnt really that much extra.

Having said all that the 120cdti's seem to be selling at a higher price used than the 150's!!!

I hate to say it (well actually I dont but I hate the need to argue that it invokes in people), I dont like Alfa Romeos.

The interior seems too fussy and I have encountered enough people who have owned one to fear their reliability. I dont believe the whole, "every one of them is a nightmare" theory, but they certainly attract more than their fair share of problems.

I will be fair and point out the 147 JTD I had on hire once was a damn sight better than the usual Focus/Mondeo they throw at us, but it was only really at home on the motorway, the faintest hint of twisty country roads and it just wanted to push the nose wide. Chronic understeer.

In any case, this battle has a victor. Went through to test drive a 330Cd on Sunday to find the car had been sold, test drove a 320Cd whilst I was there and it felt peppy enough so picking her up tomorrow.

Just realised the 150 1.9 CDTI came out in 2004 while the 120 1.9 CDTI came out late 2005 hence clearly 2nd hand the 120 will be worth more and especially as when new they only cost £500 different.

Alfa might have a few electrical issues - stick to VX

Yeh Vauxhalls never go wrong, remember that the "Vauxhall" diesel engines you are discussing are Fiat/Alfa units.

True.

Has anyone had experience with the V6 diesel found in both the Signum and Vectra? It strikes me that with a quick remap the 180bhp figure could become more inline with a bmw/audi unit at 210-220. I also presume that with all of the larger capacity diesels the economy becomes more akin to a petrol engine when on spirited drives?

I have one of these as a company hack and it is surprisingly good so long as you don't want to overtake anything on an A Road.
