Weird problem on the missus' 1.4 Astra. Battery was dead this morning. She called On-Time out for a Home Start.

Jumped the battery. She then noticed that the Radio had gone into SAFE mode, requiring the unlock code (unsurprisingly). The mechanic chap then checked all the fuses & replace one (as he thought it was a bit 'dodgy'). She doesn't know which one it was.

He didn't know what SAFE was for the radio so he left. OK then.

Missus got home tonight & read up on the radio, found the code, entered it in, went to start the car, sluggish on turn over, then the battery died.

I get home, place the battery on an Optimate charger. Within an hour, indicator on the Optimate gone from Charge to Absorb to Maintain (fully charged). Fired up the car, no problem. Did this a few times, no problem.

Entered the code to the radio. Fired up the car, a bit sluggish. On the 3rd attempt, battery died.

OK. The green disc is showing in the window on the battery. It might be fine after a good drive to put some charge in it.

My question is: is this normal behaviour for a radio to change the power drawn (bearing in mind that it was OFF when the engine was turned over? Perhaps the battery is just knackered, but before changing, I'd like to be sure as if there is an underlying problem, a new battery ain't gonna fix it.

Any help greatly appreciated.
