Meriva B possible power steering issue

MIL has a petrol Meriva B (61 plate?), low miles, local journeys, rarely gets above 30 or does more than a 5 mile journey, you know the sort of thing. She’s a very cautious driver and not mechanically minded so getting a description of a problem out of her is challenging.
She’s told me that the steering has gone very heavy a couple of times and a light came on on the dash. A bit of Googling has shown me there are common issues with PAS on the Meriva B (as well as well documented Meriva A), Vauxhall dealers will charge ££££ and replace everything.
Anybody had this and can suggest a course of action? It recently went into a dealer for a steering/abs fault which they “fixed” for over a grand
. My local neighbourhood under the arches place said they couldn’t read the codes so I’m guessing I need somebody with Tech 2. Any recommendations in SE London or Kent?
