Got 2 at the moment . 1 needs complete strip down and respray , 2nd just wants a little tlc for the mot but otherwise is a tidy one although its automatic.
Monaro is currently having a rear end refresh poly bush and wax oiling then will get onto the calibra .
Im no expert on what to look for but the engines seem pretty reliable rear bank of 3 spark plugs is a bit of a mission to do taking off the inlet manifold . On something like this id be looking at a solid chassis and the bits bolted on to it ie subframe , brackets etc . Rear brake backing plates are now available again for a premium price but a rotted out one isnt going to hold the handbrake shoes so will fail mot.
facebook pages are a good source of spares as unfortunately cheap one are worth more in parts , although decent ones are now fetching enough to keep them in one piece.

Thanks for the reply. I’ve been out of the Vauxhall loop for 20 years. A former member of the vpcc with an original silk violet 16v mk2 Astra. I suppose like most cars it’s buy the best you can afford when they get old. Interesting what you said about the rear brake back plates as I’ve had a Jaguar set repaired and then hot dip galvanised. Luckily they weren’t rotted through. Similar to the Vauxhall rear disc with drum within for the handbrake mechanism
