Astra X18XE1.8Lt Starts but stalls on key release - everytim

My Astra 2000, european build October 2000 X18XE1.8Lt , has had a string of running and difficult to start problems. Recently it was difficult to start but after a bit of nursing it would settle to running smoothly but with the engine warning light on. After visiting a local garage to read and reset codes the vehicle now does not start or run. The engine will start but then stall immediately on release of the key.
A full service has been performed including new plugs, oil, fuel and air filters. Fuel line pressure appears normal. The throttle control body has been cleaned and a substitute new ignition coil unit tried. The ignition key operation has been checked - OK.
Currently I am waiting for a code reader to read and reset codes.
Appreciate any suggestions to resolve this saga.
