2009 Insignia CDTI 2.0 aparent engine seize.... or not???
Discussion
Hi all,
I need some urgent advice.... hoping someone can help!
Over a week ago now, i was 1 hour into a journey from Nottingham to Leicester and literally 1-2 minutes from my destination, when my car shut itself down at approximately 60mph. engine went off, steering went heavy.... silence... no warning lights, no bangs or noticeable odd noises. car had been running fine up to this point, nothing out of the ordinary. I pulled over, tried to start the engine, and it would not turn over. called the RAC out... RAC man tested the battery, and hooked up a jump start device... still would not turn over! he tried to hand crank the engine, and said it seemed to have seized. i got towed home, and it has sat on my drive since.
I have called a few garages... the response i got was that if its seized, just sell it and take what ever i can get for it... so today i cleaned the car ready to stick on eBay... however, i thought i'd better take a closer look first, make sure its nothing less serious! it seems odd to me that there was no noticeable bangs, or warning lights, and the engine did not seem too hot to me immediately after pulling over! i put a 19mm socket and breaker bar on the engine, and attempted to turn it.... it did not turn easily, but it didnt take to much force to move it, and continue moving it... not sure how easy it should be! but if i can turn it by hand, surely that suggests the engine is not seized? more to the point why cant my starter motor turn it? (just put the battery on charge... but i only have a trickle charger... so will leave it a good while before trying) i have read elsewhere that a seized alternator has been known to prevent an engine turning over... could this be my problem? has anyone experienced anything like this before... what should I do? Towing to and potentially from the garage, plus the cost of diagnosing the issue are costs i would prefer to avoid if the car is not repairable.... what else can I test to try and get a better idea of what has actually happened here.... Any help would be much appreciated.... my wife is ready to kill me as I have commandeered her car in the mean time... need to decide what to do soon!
I have a reciept for new Clutch, Flywheel, & Timing Belt dated 06/01/17 at £565 but this was before i owned the car it is also stamped in the service book cam belt changed at 87122 miles on 12/01/17
