Hi all,

New here, I've found some threads to be helpful so I'm hoping someone can help with my problem.

Vehicle: Vauxhall Astra 1.6 petrol (Z16XER) 2007 hatchback.

As a bit of history, I bought this car late November 2017, when I took it for a drive I realised a dash light (spanner and car) was on and the previous owner said it was the service indicator. I'm generally a trusting guy and took him at his word, then later realised it was the 'engine electronics' light. It drove well enough for a couple of weeks, then had a knocking noise (front offside) when going over bumps.
Garage A found nothing wrong with suspension, then the knocking stopped by itself and squeaking/screeching started (front offside). It also struggled to start on a couple of occasions but not too badly.
Garage B found brakes and rear springs had the springs done then. Drove home and it felt funny, then I realised the next day it had gone to limp mode, no acceleration at all, and it soon became frequently difficult to start without revving ignition, and the revs were erratic when first started.
Booked it in garage C near work for the next week, they found 3 diagnostic faults (P2182 Engine coolant temperature circuit; P0014 Exhaust cam phasing; P0110 Intake air temp sensor circuit high input) and said the exhaust cam phasing problem would be very costly (c. £1k) from taking the engine apart and replacing parts. They cleared the faults, P2182 and P0014 came back right away. They also found bad brakes and worn wishbone bushes which likely explains the squeaking.

Then I took it to garage D (they had taken care of this car under the previous owner) two days ago, they took the sump off, cleaned out the oil pick up, cleaned the solenoids and the camshafts (apparently it was pretty clogged up), recalibrated the timing, and cleared the faults. The sensor faults came back but their diagnostic read the cam phasing fault as cleared, and hey presto no more limp mode. Charged £250 rather than the previous £1k.

Issue is, the light is still on for those sensor faults, and it's still difficult to get the car started when I turn the key in the ignition. Garage D says the coolant sensor fault had been present under the previous owner and when they read the temperatures everything was okay. I'd like to take care of the sensor issue (could be the sensor or wiring?), and I'd like to solve the ignition issue which is still a problem - I don't know if that's the starter motor, spark plugs, crank sensor or what. I'm hoping with that detail someone could have an educated guess of what could be causing these issues and how to fix them in the most economical way? I'd like to take care of these two issues and be sure the engine is going to last before I go spending £700 getting the brakes, bushes, and wishbones done.
