2016 Corsa engines/gearboxes
Discussion
Elroy Jnr has just passed his test and having saved hard, has his eye on a Corsa Sri VX-line. It's what he wants, it's his money and they don't look bad little cars.
Insurance for all the petrol engine variants is about the same. So which is the best combination for a mixture of motorway/town driving. I've red the M32 gearbox associated with the 1.4T is made of chocolate. Is that still the case?
Some 1.4 n/a engines are 89bhp and £30/yr tax, some are 99bhp and £110.
The 1.0T looks appealing, but I have an old mans aversion to these small stressed engines.
Any pointers or advice gratefully received.

M32 has (had?) issues with diff bearings, a new part was released - this was about 8-10 years ago.
There are a few other issues, but mainly in high torque cars (Astra VXR & diesels) and to some extent corsa VXR too.
I suspect many of the issues experienced are down to abuse - lads in fast cars / company pool cars etc.
I shouldn't have though the engines you're looking at will trouble it. They may even have revised parts now - don't know.
I wouldn't worry about the engines, I've always found Vauxhall engines to be quite good and reliable on the whole. I think I'd question how good the 1 litre is for motorway stuff though. If junior is off to uni in a year or twothe bigger engines might be better for trips home ?

I think the revised M32s have stronger bearings and revised oil galleries. Mine is spot on with 112k miles on the car, and it has a fair bit more power and torque and carries more weight.
It's a mk5 Astra 2.0 turbo - 197 horsepower/193 lb ft. They certainly have failed on my engine but it seems more of a risk on the VXR and 1.9 CDTI 16 valve. Mine is a 2005 car and I'm told the box has been revised since then and shouldn't be a problem. I doubt it would be in use 12 years later if it was a major issue

I rebuild the M32 boxes and even in the revised versions they still fail. I've had numerous 2012 ish Corsas, Astras with varying engines and all less than 60k on the clock needing rebuilds. I haven't seen any after 2012 yet but not being in a dealership means you don't see many cars under 3-4 years.
Engine wise all Vauxhall engines are fairly reliable but all have their flaws just like any other engines. I too am weary of the "small engine with the turbo to make it a big engine" idea

Nope. It's the lad's money, he's earned it and with insurance in mind, wants a 'sporty' car. You have to remind yourself what you were like when you were just 18.
I tried to point him to something 'sensible', but that's boring apparently
Not at all worried about the PSA takeover. If he's anything like I was, he'll be changing it in a year and losing a ton of money in the process.

I have a 15 plate sri vx line corsa, nice enough inside, dab, bluetooth, cruise, a/c, etc.
Goes ok ish up to about 4k with the 1.4 turbo engine, i test drove a n/a one and it wasn't as good.
The higher road tax is because of the wider wheels/tyres.
Have a look on corsaeforums.co.uk for more info.
