Vauxhall Nova (Clutch/transmission/brake?) issues

So Im trying to fix up a Nova in my garage, and I have the engine running somewhat well, but I cannot get the car to move. I can start the engine, put the clutch down, put it into gear, but when I try to let off the clutch, it dies, no matter how much I rev it. The car does not noticeably move forward at all. The choke is on, as I cannot keep the car running long enough to get the engine to the point where it can run with the choke off, due to fumes. The exhaust is split, and before the split there is a minor kink, where the exhaust has been bent. The rear drum brakes are jammed on, but I believe that the front are fine (got them turning). (Just trying to give as much info as possible cause there's a fair few issues that may or may not make a difference). Anyone know why there is no movement/why the engine dies?

Engine isnt powerful enough to overcome the seized on rear brakes?

If the clutch allows you to engage the gears, bites when you release and stalls when you try to pull away then I'd be looking to get the rear drums un-seized.

Presume engine is ok to free rev?

There is a good chance the engine isn't powerful enough (50HP when new, and its not in a great state as it is). Its OK to free rev in neutral and before it dies. Don't think the clutch is biting before it dies, though I may be wrong (haven't driven in a while)

personally I would let the car go and start again. it sounds like its fit for scrap, or sold as spares or repairs.

That's helpful! Fit for scrap because the brakes are stuck on.;)

You need to get the rear wheels off and free up the drums, brakes frequently stick on if left for any length of time. Might be take a while to get the drums off though, spray the handbrake linkages with real ease spray and let it all soak through.

Is the rest of the Car ok, Novas seem to be on the up at the moment, they are getting to the age where those that played with them in their youth are able to buy them as toys again. Early ones have become eligible for historic rallying too, another reason to think about keeping them on the road not scrapping them.
