Hello, im just looking for some advice on an issue with my gearbox in my Insignia.
Occasionally when I put it in drive it jerks the car violently and makes a loud bang.
Ive had it back to where I bought it last November, a Car Supermarket in Staffordshire,
where they couldn't find anything wrong with it but they changed the ATF and done a Softwear update.

Since then ive had it back 3 times with same problem for them to say that they cant find anything wrong
with it as there are no Error Codes coming up on diagnostic machine.
Its seems to do it after a fast drive, like up the motorway or duel carriageway.
Sometimes the gear change when you are slowing down can be very rough, but again not all the time.
the car has 30000 on clock and full service history.

Any advice would be gratefully appreciated.

Take it back to them and walk away from it, it's going to cost you a small fortune otherwise.

If they can't fix it, they need to take it to someone who can. Either Vauxhall, or a gearbox specialist, Sooner, rather than later.

Well I cant exactly walk away from it as the car was paid for in full when I got it.
I was wondering if there was any way I could get them to open the gearbox up and have a look as ive asked them a number of times
but they say they wont until they diagnose the problem as there are no fault lights on. Basically if the car is saying its alright then they say theres nothing wrong with it.

You need to grow some and stand up for your rights. Just because the car is showing no error codes, does not mean that there is no fault. They are using it to buy themselves some time, hoping you will go away. The fact you have paid in full is immaterial. How long have you had it? You need to research what your are entitled to and what the sellers responsibilities are.

I got the car last November, believe me ive been at loggerheads with the after sales manager trying to get it sorted.
Its going back in next Friday again for them to have a look at but again its if it will play up when they test drive it.
I feel like smashing it up a wall sometimes with frustration as they don't believe a word im telling them. Ive got an Astra auto that's 14 years old and it still drives like new never had a problem with it.

How loud is the bang? My old auto Cavalier used to slip into drive with quite a thump, could it be something as simple as the transmission or engine mount bushings being a bit worn?

It's a fair bang. Tried to upload a video I've taken but it won't for some reason. It completely shakes the car. The only way I can describe it is its like putting a manual car into gear without using the clutch.

You say they've done a software update and also changed the gearbox fluid, do you have proof the correct fluid was used?

Most probably a worn valve body. On a newish car like this it's probably been thrashed from Day 1, transmission fluid has overheated and valve body shagged. If you can't get rid of it get it to an automatic transmission specialist. www.fedauto.co.uk is a good place to start.

Well,I can't trust them to do anything. It's so frustrating, been driving since I was 6.Got my Hgv Class 1, All my Digger licences. And I've just passed my rally licence so I know I am not abusing the Gearbox unintentional.Im no mechanic but I've been round long enough to know that something is not right. But try telling some salesman that.

I have a Citroen that uses the same transmission, and it has had the same problem for the past 50,000 miles.

While the car was under warranty, the dealer did a software update, that made the problem (which was very intermittent back then) disappear until the end of the warranty. When the problem came back after the warranty had expired, Citroen decided that they did not want to contribute anything towards the cost of the repair.

Anyway, the problem you describe sounds like the valve block on the gearbox. My car didn't throw up any fault codes either. There is a company in Sussex who sell the part for around £500, and the best quote I have had to supply and fit the valve block was £900 from STA Transmissions in Aylesbury.

It's a popular fault with this gearbox. I know of at least two other people (in real life, not just on the internet) who have had the same problem with this gearbox - one in a Volvo and one in a Vauxhall.

It's an excellent gearbox when it works though.

My guess it uses a TF80 (I think GM call it an AF40) but it is the same gearbox. You can't just "open them up" and auto gearboxes are a specialised thing.

I suspect it needs major work.

If so, this is the same transmission they put in a lot of Volvos... the symptoms you describe basically = a shagged gearbox and no amount of software updates or fluid changes will fix it. Its knackered.
Yes, that's the one. Volvo had loads of problems with the early AF50/51 5-speeds then finally got them sorted around 2005. For 2006 they started fitting the 6-speed TF80 which started the whole cycle of disaster once again. I've come across many 2006-2007 Volvos with 80-120k either with knackered gearboxes or on their second gearbox.

Hi Eden! A newbie on the forum here...

I found this thread after looking for some answers for my Insignia's gearbox problem. My '11 Insignia is behaving pretty much as you described. Every now and then after longer drive the gearbox jerks hard when putting the it to D position. It never does it when cold. Otherwise the transmission works quite well.
I started noticing the problem a few weeks after my local garage made a software update to gearbox. Don't know if it had anything to do with the problem though. Car doesn't give any error codes either. Just had the garage do a flush and oil change to the transmission, but according to them, it didn't cure the problem.
I'd like to know if you have found some solution for your problem?

Regards,

Jamma from Finland

Hi There i know this post was some time ago but did you get your gearbox sorted ? its just that I had exactly the same thing which started over a 2 1/2 years year period with my 2012 insignia auto 2L D with 23K miles on the clock,i have only just got it resolved yesterday with 100K on the clock.
The fault would appear when stopped and when driving off jolt and bang when driving off and bang your head back in the seat, usually when travelling in stop start traffic.(a bit like having a stuck electronic handbrake on- but this was proved not)

Unfortunately i have not got any advise other than keep persisting with your Vauxhall dealer noting that you have reported the same intermittent fault, and that its the responsibility of manufacturer/main dealer representative to sort it and get to the bottom of it irrespective of the fault not happening in the short spell they have it. (after all it is intermittent fault)

my story is....
I had an extended Vauxhall warranty (2 years 25/month £600) but they refused to also acknowledge there was a fault or even would it replicate itself during there tests and servicing, however I insisted that they logged and recorded every time i took it in for its service interval that the fault is still there (incidentally i serviced it every 10K).

Over the 2 plus years period they changed the gearbox oil, which Vauxhall advised me that the oil is burnt?? i thought maybe that was possibly due to my high speed driving? you also mentioned you drive fast on motorways etc.
Anyway the gearbox oil change seemed to cure it for awhile, but as you probably guessed, it slowly came back.

Long story short and numerous visits back to Vauxhall (Eden Newbury) and 80K miles later ( and warranty now ended!!) we came to an amical agreement with me to which they agreed to replace the gearbox but had to pay a further £250 contribution to pay for there extended warranty to allow this to happen.( at the same time i negotiated a major service and timing belt/water pump change for £400)

So date as of yesterday one new gearbox with another years warranty is now in place..... i suppose i could keep you updated to see how this goes...
