electrical fault with 92 calibra

well i say its a calibra its, i have nicked the engine and ecu out of one ( hacked out by someone else) that is going into a mini.
the engine is a c20xe with a motronic 2.5 ecu
all the wires going to the ecu have been cut now i have rewired it by going red to red black to black and blue to bits and whilst cross-referencing it from pin data on autodata.
now the problem i have is that i am not getting a signal from the crankshaft position sensor which is resulting in no spark. the coil is also positive on both sides but i have nothing to check if that's correct or not but in my mind it isnt.
so back to the crankshaft sensor. pin 47 should be a live signal input from the sensor however it is earth constant even upon cranking. pin 48, i dont know what the little signal means because the user note on auto data isnt working! grr
i have unplugged the sensor and pin 47 is still earthed so that eliminates the sensor one would think. when i disconnect the ecu the wire becomes dead i.e it isnt earthed any more. so have i missed a wire potentially when wiring the ecu ? have i fried the ecu or is there anything you guys and girls can think of that i missed ? many questions just no answers.
