Zafira Z18XE cutting off
Discussion
Hi..
My neighbour owns a Zafira 1.8 2001 ( Z18XE). After about 8 minutes driving or idling the car just cuts out with no warning and it will not start again until you leave it for half an hour or so then it will start again. When it cuts out the cooling fans for the radiator and AC starts running for about 5 minutes. ( key into the lock or out makes no difference)
When I try start the engine directly after cutting off and turn the key to position II all control lamps works but not the ones for the engine management and service. I know it is useless to try and start the engine at that point because without those two lightened up it won’t. ( starter motor is working) Only after waiting for half an hour or so the two lamps are also again illuminated at key position II and I know it will start right away and drives fine again….for 8 minutes or so and cuts out again. It is not overheating ( mostly 85 up to 90 deg C. ) I did check the complete cooling system also the cooling module for moisture etc. I still have to check the ac pressure sensor. The AC is not working and a belt for a car without AC is placed . The wire going to the compressor is broken . (.. can this be the problem? )
There is no fault codes to read after cutting out because off the engine lamp is not illuminated when I turn the key to position II and i can’t connect to the computer then ofcourse . When the lamps illuminate after half an hour also again i can connect to comp. But i guess it wiped out error codes. (if there were any) because it did lose power. I tried another ECT sensor (not specified for the Z18XE but the motor did run fine)..but still the same. I did run the car with the camshaft sensor disconnected and also with the crankshaft sensor disconnected…but still the same. You know the Z18XE motor ( and many others) cut off when you try to accelerate and using the brakes the same time. It is exactly the same thing….turning fans …not starting until the two lamps illuminate again …everything is exactly the same. I did swap the two purple relays in the black box under the hood and also did try to connect the pin 85 from the fuel pump relay directly to the battery and did try bridge the 2 relays. Air filter is fine.
History:
The car did cut out before. And after waiting some time the car could be start again. At the garage they did put a new vent. Valve in and new hoses for the carter vent. to the throttle body. When that did not solve the cutting out they told the man that he most likely needs a new computer. My neighbour asked me to have a look and I found that they did only put new hoses on and the new vent valve without cleaning the throttle body ( very dirty and the small pinhole for vent. was clogged also) . But this did not solve the problem. I did get the gas cap off the car and a huge vacuem was there. ( the man said to me that when he did the same thing the car started up again…lol…lol…he had solved this problem already by himself but he was not aware off it.) I looked after the cool canister and it was totally clogged and not recoverable anymore . They did not check this one at the garage either…only put a new vent. Valve. Useless to do so ofcourse without anything to ‘vent’ there because the cool canister was totally glogged.
He did drive around for some time this way and he told me that the past weeks the problem was getting worse. Getting the gas cap off the car did not always do any help anymore.
For now I fitted a gas cap with vent. and did make a hole in the cool canister and look for the ‘other’ new problem on top off this writing.
Can this new problem be related to the old problem somehow?
Pffff...Hope somebody can help me/us out on this one …
