As per title. Car sounds like a diesel when idling, gets quieter when warmed up, a bit.

A little web research has suggested either timing chain/tensioner or, more worryingly, cam shaft bolts loose.

Anyone got any advice or other possibilties?

I thought the 1.4 was a belt?

Depends on the engine. Z14XE is belt, Z14XEP is chain. A14XE? are chains too.

It's a chain, hence the question.

In that case you need to replace the chain and tensioners. You can buy a full kit with everything in.

I have x12xep that's had it all changed, its silent now you can even tell its turned on from inside the cabin
